A Message from Principal Woofter
While this was a short week, it has been very busy at Archer Glen! I wanted to share some of the incredible things that students are doing in their Specials classes.
Students in Grades 1-5 have been participating in the Mileage Club during PE at least one day a week, as weather permits. Ask your student(s) about their progress as they are able to track each lap they run and are earning running tags as they hit milestone mileages. It is unbelievable to see how many laps students have been accumulating - some students have surpassed the 20 mile mark already! Mileage Club will continue as long as the weather allows for students to be outside and will then start up again in the spring.
In Music, students are practicing a variety of skills, including reading music and practicing singing or playing musical instruments. I stopped by to see some of our students "feeding the monster" the other day. Each child had a card with a sequence of notes. When it was their turn, the student demonstrated their sequence of notes and then got to put their card in the monster's mouth. The monster's tummy was very full by the end of class!
Students are wild about STEM! Students have been learning about sound and how vibrations can affect the pitch using the Dash robots. Groups made sound posters and then are using coding to program their Dash robots to play tunes on a xylophone. It is so cool to see students working together and having fun learning about these concepts!
Just a reminder that there is no school tomorrow, October 11, for our State Inservice Day. Additionally, be on the lookout for an email from your child's teacher that will include a link for you to sign up for conferences later this month. Enjoy the long weekend!
Kindly,
Sarah
New! Before School Drop Off Location
Starting on Monday, if you are dropping your child off at school between 7:30-7:45am we will have all students enter through the side activities door. Students who are not eating breakfast will walk into the gym from there. Thank you for your cooperation.
Lock Down Drill on 10/14
At the Sherwood School District, we know you entrust your children to us each day and we do not take that responsibility lightly. The District has worked diligently over the years to establish comprehensive safety protocols and emergency procedures in order to help keep our students and staff safe -- on a daily basis, and in the unlikely event of an emergency.
During the past few weeks, we have been educating our students about emergency procedures. During the next few weeks, we will be conducting district-wide emergency drills in order to give our students and staff an opportunity to practice what they know. We have taken great care to make sure our conversations about this topic are age appropriate, and we want you to be aware of our drills so you can visit with your children at home, too.
On Monday, October 14th, Archer Glen will be practicing a Lock Down Drill at 1:30 pm. Other district administrators, and possibly the Sherwood Police, will be on-site to observe and provide feedback for our drill. If you are around our campus during the time of our drill, please do not be alarmed by the increased police or admin presence.
If you arrive during a drill, you will not be allowed to enter and students will not be allowed to exit until the drill concludes. Please plan ahead if you need to drop off or pick up your student during the day of a drill.
Great Oregon ShakeOut Earthquake Drill on 10/17
The annual Great Oregon ShakeOut is part of an international safety preparedness program, where millions of people worldwide participate in earthquake drills on the same day. This year’s earthquake drill will be held on October 17, and for all of Oregon will be held at 10:17 am. All schools and district facilities will participate in this annual drill, and this is the first of two earthquake drills that will be practiced by our location this year.
Attendance Matters
This year our school district will continue to focus on improving student attendance to help our students have the best possible school experience. Your child's regular attendance in school encourages academic and social-emotional success.
Missed days add up quickly: When a student misses as few as two days a month, that’s 10% of the school year. This can make catching up or feeling connected feel overwhelming. Students with solid attendance are much more likely to be successful and have a positive school experience - starting as young as kindergarten!
We will send attendance notifications home each trimester to all families so you are aware of your child’s current/overall attendance rate. We will also communicate with families regarding attendance concerns. We appreciate your partnership and want to see your child at school each day!
Here are a few of the resources available to help support your child/family with regular attendance:
In need of assistance with food, clothing, or school supplies? Contact our SHARE Center today at 503-825-5087, or email our Family Resource Coordinator Amy Gillett at agillett@sherwood.k12.or.us.
Does your child have a recurring illness or dental issue, and need access to care? Contact our Health Services Department at 503-825-5093 or health@sherwood.k12.or.us for referrals to community resources or to speak with one of our school nurses.
Is your child in need of support for their mental/emotional health? Contact our Mental Health Coordinator Chelsie Vukovich at 503-825-5034 or cvukovich@sherwood.k12.or.us.
Does your child need greater academic support? Reach out directly to your child’s teacher(s), or contact your school’s office for assistance.
Too Sick for School?
We know that there are lots of sick bugs out there right now, and we've had many questions from parents about when students can return to school after being sick. Below is our guide for when to keep students out of school. You can also click the link here to view a larger copy.
Thanks for your help in keeping our school community healthy!

Important: What Parents Need to Know About Naloxone and Opioid Safety
Dear Parents and Guardians,
At Sherwood School District, we care deeply about the safety and well-being of all our students. With the rise in opioid use, including fentanyl, we want to keep our community informed. The opioid overdose crisis in Oregon has reached alarming proportions. Since 2019, the number of unintentional overdose deaths has skyrocketed, rising from 280 in 2019 to a staggering 1,392 in 2023. In this letter, we'll explain the dangers of opioids and what we're doing to keep our students safe.
What is an opioid? Opioids are a class of drugs that include the illegal drug heroin, synthetic opioids such as fentanyl, and pain relievers available legally by prescription, such as oxycodone, hydrocodone, codeine, morphine, and many others.
Why are opioids so dangerous? Opioids slow down the actions of the body, such as breathing and heartbeat. Even a single dose of an opioid can cause severe respiratory depression (slowing or stopping of breathing), which can be fatal; taking opioids with alcohol or sedatives increases this risk. Fentanyl is a powerful opioid: a dose as small as a few grains of sand can make a person stop breathing within minutes.
What is naloxone? Naloxone (commonly known as Narcan) blocks the effect of opioids on the body and restores breathing to a person whose breathing has slowed or stopped to dangerous levels due to an overdose. Naloxone can quickly be delivered by a nasal spray or injection. Naloxone may be administered in emergency overdose situations, is safe for the person receiving the medication and has no effect on someone who does not have opioids in their system.
What is Sherwood School District doing? Our district provides comprehensive, developmentally appropriate drug and alcohol education. All schools will stock naloxone and necessary medical supplies. In addition, staff are trained to administer naloxone to any person suspected of experiencing an opioid overdose. Anytime naloxone is administered school staff will call 911 and immediately notify the student’s parents or guardian, if applicable.
What can you do as a parent? We understand that talking about opioid use with your child can be challenging. The US Drug Enforcement Administration: One Pill Can Kill Campaign has parent and caregiver resources that may be helpful. The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration also offers a Tips for Teens: Opioids handout you can share with your student.
If you have any questions or concerns, please contact the Sherwood School District Health Services Department at health@sherwood.k12.or.us.
Volunteers
The District will be welcoming volunteers back into our school buildings this year. All volunteers will need to complete and have an approved background check on file prior to volunteering (this must be renewed each school year). The background check process can take 7-10 business days, so please allow sufficient processing time if you are planning to volunteer for a specific event.
HelpCounter Volunteer Information
Our Archer Glen Parent Advisory Committee (PAC) is creating an updated email list for school information and other ways to support our school. If you are looking to volunteer at Archer Glen this year, please sign up using the link shared here. If you are new to Archer Glen you will need to create a new login. Past volunteers can use their old sign in. (Please note that this link does not work well on your phone so you will need to use another device).
ALL parents will need to fill out their information again as the system gets updated each fall. The registration will ask some questions about volunteer preferences, please still answer the questions and select all activities you might be interested in learning more about!
You can find out more information about how to sign up for volunteer opportunities at Archer Glen using HelpCounter by visiting Archer Glen PAC's Instagram handle here.
