Chandler High Wolf Bytes
School of Champions
July 23, 2019
WELCOME TO THE 2019-2020 SCHOOL YEAR!
It’s Tuesday, July 23rd, and that means CHS is back in session! Wolf Days and Freshman Orientation were a great success and helped transition students into the new year. Thanks to CHS Staff and Student Council for their help with Wolf Days and getting almost 3400 students ready for today. Last week, Link Crew and Link Teacher Leaders sponsored a terrific Freshman Orientation where staff “clapped in” CHS’s newest freshmen, who then participated in an assembly, small group activities, and a campus tour. Let’s make it a great year, Wolves!
FCCLA WINS SILVER AT NATIONALS
This July, Chandler High FCCLA-Early Childhood had two teams compete at National Competition in Anaheim, CA. CHS’s teams competed against the top 2 teams in the U.S. and Puerto Rico. Stevie Garcia and Valerie Valdez won a silver medal in Chapter in Review. Paloma Ramirez and Marissa Palmerin won a silver medal for their Chapter Service Project: Yuda Bands. Congratulations on a job well done!
ALL-AMERICAN WRESTLER
Congratulations to Zach Espalin, USA Wrestling 2019 Freestyle National Championships All-American! Zach is just the 10th multi All-American in Chandler Wrestling history.
FFA HEADING TO NATIONALS
Congratulations to CHS’s FFA Parliamentary Procedure Team for winning the state competition in June! The team will compete at Nationals in October in Indianapolis. Congratulations and good luck!
SUMMER LEADERSHIP
Several Wolves took advantage of leadership opportunities such as Girls State, Boys State, HOBY, Arizona Association of Student Councils (AASC), Chandler Police Youth Academy, ASU conferences, and more this summer. Alex Moxley and Austin Morrow, CHS Seniors, attended Boys State in Flagstaff. Alex stated, "Boys State was a uniquely challenging experience for me. Throughout my week there, I learned some of the intricacies of court procedures, as well as finding awesome new friends to share my experiences with." Austin believes the knowledge and lessons he took away from Boys State are some that he’ll never forget. “My short time there truly shaped my aspirations for the future and I’m glad I made lifelong friends throughout the journey.”
Jordyn De La Torre was one of three CHS juniors to attend the Hugh O’Brian Youth (HOBY) Leadership Conference and described it as “an amazing, once-in-a-lifetime experience that made me become a better person within the span of a few days. It gave me the opportunity to be thrown into a setting where I could meet new people and experience an atmosphere of love and acceptance amongst strangers. I have still stayed in contact with my HOBY family and am currently working toward creating a nonprofit with them.”
Applications for leadership conferences are available in the CHS College and Career Center throughout the year. Watch for them!
AZCENTRAL SPORTS AWARD
Congratulations to Decarlos Brooks (football) and Braxton Bradbeer (boys volleyball), 2019 CHS graduates and AZCentral Players of the Year in their respective sports! Well done, gentlemen!
VOLLEYBALL ACADEMIC ACCOLADES
CHS is one of three schools in the country to have its girls, boys, and beach volleyball programs receive team academic recognition from the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA). The award honors collegiate and high school volleyball teams that display excellence in the classroom during the school year by maintaining at least a 3.30 cumulative team grade-point average on a 4.0 scale. Chandler Girls Volleyball earned a 3.71 team GPA. Girls Beach had a 4.27 team GPA, and Boys Volleyball earned a 3.64 team GPA.
This is the second consecutive year being recognized for both the Girls Indoor and Beach programs, while this is the fourth consecutive year for the Boys program. What an honor!
SUSTAINABILITY SUMMIT
Over 350 German language and science students, teachers, and experts on the matter of sustainability from Germany and the U.S. had the opportunity to come together in Chicago to attend the Goethe Institut’s Sustainability Summit at Loyola University over Memorial Day weekend. Six Chandler High School German and Environmental Science students and their teachers, Melanie Mello and Russell Davis, were lucky recipients of a grant to participate in this summit. The summit opened Friday night with a welcome address and the launch of the Kinderuni followed by a concert by German band “Land in Sicht”. During the summit, students had the great opportunity to partake in a keynote address by Jamie Cloud, founder and president of the Cloud Institute for Sustainable Education, and workshops discussing global climate change, food waste, biodiversity and the importance of taking action to sustain our planet in the future.
OUTREACH: GERMAN SOCCER CAMP AT WJHS
As part of the Deutschlandjahr USA, the Goethe-Instiut Chicago organized four three-day long German immersion soccer camps across the United States, and CHS’s German Program was able to bring this camp - thanks to the support of Principal Delp – to the students of Willis Junior High School. With the help of several CHS volunteers and two professional youth soccer coaches from the German non-profit Auf Ballhöhe, former CHS German teacher, Melanie Mello, immersed participating students in the German language and culture through language classes and soccer drills. If you are interested to see what this camp was all about, please visit the institute’s Facebook page
