Billerica Public Schools Student Handbooks
We want to inform you that our district's handbooks have been updated. While there are no changes to our day-to-day operations, we have revised the language to ensure it aligns with current state and federal regulations. These updates were approved by the School Committee on December 10th, and the most up-to-date version is now in effect.
You can view the revised handbook at the link below. Please take a moment to review it, and feel free to reach out if you have any questions.
NOTICE REGARDING STUDENT RECORDS AND DIRECTORY INFORMATION
Billerica Public Schools complies with applicable state and federal laws regarding records of public school students, including the Massachusetts Student Record statutes (including MGL c. 71 ยงยง 34A, 34D, 34E, 34H, 37L) and regulations (603 CMR 23.00 et seq.) and the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act and regulations (FERPA, 20 U.S.C. ยง1232g and 34 CFR Part 99).
Under the law, student records are divided into multiple parts: the transcript, the temporary record, and directory information. The transcript contains the studentโs name, address, course titles, grades, credits, and grade level completed. The school keeps the transcript for at least sixty years after the student leaves the school. The temporary record may consist of standardized test scores, class rank, school-sponsored extracurricular activities, evaluations and comments by school personnel, and disciplinary information. The temporary record is destroyed within seven years after the student leaves the school system. Among other rights accorded to parents and eligible students under the law are: the rights to inspect and review student records upon request, to receive copies of these records, to seek amendments to the records if they are inaccurate or violate a studentโs privacy rights, and to meet with the Principal or the Principalโs designee to discuss the contents of the student record.
Please be advised that the district must release directory information about students to certain third parties, including military recruiters, institutions of higher learning, and charter schools, pursuant to 603 CMR 23.00, et. seq., unless a parent objects in writing,
According to MGL 603 CMR 23.07 (4)(a) such โdirectoryโ information may include, but is not limited to name, address, telephone, activities, sports, degrees and honors, etc. Unless a parent/guardian or the student notifies the principal on or before December 20, 2024, that they do not wish to have a studentโs information released, this information may be released without further notice or consent in response to appropriate requests for directory information. Please be advised that the parent or student has the right to refuse release of this information at any time, but that until the request is made in writing, the information may be released.
Except for the provisions of 603 CMR 23.07(4)(a) through 23.07(4)(h), no third party shall have access to information in or from a student record without the specific, informed written consent of the eligible student or the parent. When granting consent, the eligible student or parent shall have the right to designate which parts of the student record shall be released to the third party.

Ditson School App
Improving student learning outcomes is the top priority for all of us here at the Ditson Elementary School. We know that parent and family engagement is one of the biggest factors in student success, and our new Ditson Elementary School App will allow parents to easily connect with what is going on at the school. From in-app translations to push notifications for urgent messages, we know this will be an impactful addition to our existing methods of communicating with families.
