Principals Corner: Future Scheduling for 2023-2024
Hello Hawks families,
March is now here and with it comes a focus at CPHS on future scheduling for the 2023-2024 school year! It seems odd that at a time where we are still engaged in Parent/Teacher conferences about this school year, that we would already look into registering for classes for next year. However, March is traditionally the month that we launch into our future scheduling window, so lets look at some key items of note:
March 13 - March 24 is our window for Future Scheduling. We will have a video to show students during Hawk Time on Monday, March 13th, as well as Electives Fairs during Hawk Time throughout the week that will help prepare students to begin to think about signing up for classes for next school year.
In our launch video we will spend quite a bit of time talking to students about the concept of "Momentum Classes". Momentum classes are classes designed to propel a student into their post high school ambitions. It varies student to student depending on their college or career interests, but we offer a variety of unique and challenging courses at CPHS so that all students can find a momentum course that will stretch them towards their post high school plans.
For those interested in learning more about our partnership program with SeaTech or Running Start, there is a parent meeting on Monday, March 13th at 5:30pm here on campus in classroom 622/623. For Running Start students in particular this year we are requiring new running start students to attend a mandatory parent meeting with administration so that families have a clear understanding of the program pros and cons.
During our Future Scheduling launch we will also share with students next years 2023-2024 Course Catalogue. Students will see that we have added to our College in the High School offerings for next year! Currently, through Eastern Washington University, we offer college credit through English 11, English 12, American Government, and Psychology. We are adding CiHS Pre-Calculus and Mathematical Reasoning as two math college credit courses our students can enroll in. Additionally, a new CTE elective called "Careers in Education," will also be a College in the High School course offering. Graduation requirement course, Personal Finance, will continue to be a College in the High School course through Central Washington University as it has been these past few years. We also will continue to have a variety of Dual Credit courses with Walla Walla Community College as part of our strong CTE program offerings. Truly, our students could earn more than 50+ college credits by participating in our College in the High School and Dual Credit programs, with opportunities for tuition assistance for all of our families.
As a parent/guardian, I encourage you to be involved in the future scheduling process with your student. Ask them to share with you what courses they are planning on taking, and ask them what "Momentum Courses" they are considering signing-up for. Thinking about and talking about post high school plans is really important and your help in having those conversations is crucial.
If you have any questions specifically about Future Scheduling, please look for an email that I will send on March 13th with the links to the launch video, course catalogue, and other materials we will distribute to the students on that date. You may also at any time reach out to your student's counselor for questions or concerns about courses and post high school plans.
Thank you and Go Hawks!

Hawks Teacher Shout Out!...McKenzie Maxwell
Ms. Maxwell teaches English 11, English 12, and College in the High School English 12. She is also our advisor for Rainbow Alliance and the Drama Club.
Below is our interview with Ms. Maxwell.
Interviewer: Ms. Maxwell, how long have you been teaching here at CPHS and have you taught in any schools beforehand?
Maxwell: Since 2016 and before hand I was at McLoughlin High School (Mac-Hi) for a few years.
Interviewer: Ms. Maxwell, what do you love most about teaching?
Maxwell: I love that there is no way you can get bored. It is different from day to day and class to class. And I love that I learn so much from my students. I learn as much from them as they learn from me!
Interviewer: Ms. Maxwell, what is one lesson you considerably enjoy teaching and why?
Maxwell: So many....The big ones like Lionstale and StoryCorps, but I also like teaching Othello because it gets kids out of their seats and it forces them to be creative and collaborative as they get to perform scenes in their own way and style. I get to see kids blossom in that unit, so many that start not liking it get won over by the end of it!
Interviewer: Ms. Maxwell what do you want the families of your students to know about you?
Maxwell: I care about your student holistically. Not just in my class or in my subject matter, but their student as a whole.
Math Bootcamp Opportunity!
Our target students are those who were close to passing their previous BAC Math exam but fell short by only a few points. This Bootcamp is intended to share with students test taking strategies and plug a few gaps in knowledge so that they can move into the passing score range.
Math teacher, Ms. Paige Hockersmith, is going to run this after school test prep opportunity from March 13-April 14; Tuesday through Thursday in room 220 from 3:00-4:00pm. After school transportation is available.
For students we strongly encourage to attend, a letter will be sent out to families directly.
