🐾 April 2025 Newsletter 🐾
From the Desk of Mrs. Rouse
Spring is in full bloom, and we are excited for all that April has in store at Nansemond Parkway
Elementary! As we enter the final stretch of the school year, our focus remains on academic
success, student growth, and finishing the year strong. Below are some important updates and
reminders for this month.
Partnering for Positive Student Behavior
At Nansemond Parkway Elementary, we strive to create a positive and respectful learning
environment for all students. We ask for your support in reinforcing positive behaviors at home
by encouraging kindness, responsibility, and good decision-making. Please talk with your child
about the importance of following school expectations, treating others with respect, and making
choices that support a safe and productive learning environment. Together, we can help our
students succeed both academically and socially! Thank you for your partnership.
Help Your Child Prepare for Upcoming SOL Testing!
As we approach SOL testing (May), we encourage parents to support their children by reviewing
key concepts at home. Practicing skills, completing review activities, and discussing what
they’re learning can help reinforce classroom instruction. Setting a routine for study time,
ensuring your child gets plenty of rest, and maintaining a positive mindset will also contribute to
their success. Thank you for partnering with us to help our students do their best!

Academic Coach:
Our grades 3-5 morning tutoring will resume on April 8th. If you would like your student to participate in morning tutoring please email me at ashleynettles@spsk12.net .
Early Start: We are growing! We have come a long way this year and only have 3 more weekly letters to complete! Please continue to review the letter of the week with your child, as well as past letters. Students should be able to identify the letters in print, write the letters using proper formation and tell the letter sounds. Many students are ready to begin sounding out simple words such as cvc words using the letter sounds and blending the sounds together! This month we will study how things work and move. We are also planning our Spring Egg Hunt to kick off Spring Break! When we return from break, we will observe our very own caterpillars while discussing the lifecycle of the butterfly, and have a butterfly release party.
Kindergarten: Happy Spring! Spring is in the air and with it comes chilly and warm days, please dress your child appropriately for the weather. During spring we will be discussing living and nonliving things along with the life cycle of animals. In Spring, we all tend to get tired and behaviors rise. Please continue to talk to your child about following the classroom and school rules and the necessity for following these rules. Continue to refer to the study guide for reviewing lessons taught as well as upcoming skills. In addition, use the small UFLI sheets to review phonics skills. As always, thanks for your continued support!
1st Grade:
We are excited to welcome the 4th nine weeks. In Reading we will continue to work on our reading skills to read decodable stories and answer questions about what we read. In Math we will begin to work on Time and read and solve Story Problems. In Social Studies we will begin learning about Virginia Climate and our physical surroundings. Please remember to work on the home practice sheets nightly. We hope everyone has a wonderful Spring Break!
2nd Grade: Happy Spring everyone! For the month of April in Math, students will begin learning about measurement. This will include length, weight, capacity, and time. In Reading students will work on reading words with the following spelling features (oo, ou, oy, oi, and aw). In Writing students will continue to practice cursive, and also work on composing stories. In Social Studies students will learn about American Indian culture and contributions. Please continue to read nightly with your child to help them with their fluency and comprehension. Please also review any study guides that are sent home.
3rd Grade: Third grade is diving into SOL review for both reading and math, reinforcing key skills to ensure students feel confident and prepared for their upcoming assessments. In reading, we are focusing on comprehension strategies, vocabulary, and identifying text features, while in math, we are practicing problem-solving, computation, and critical thinking with multi-step word problems. Alongside our review, we are also beginning our unit on ancient Egypt, where students will explore the geography, culture, and contributions of this fascinating civilization. From the mighty pyramids to the importance of the Nile River, students will uncover the lasting impact of ancient Egypt on the world today.
4th Grade:
Hello Families,
Happy Spring! Please encourage your child to utilize the SOL pass website, solpass.org, to prepare for their upcoming tests. See our weekly newsletter for login information! We hope you all enjoy your well deserved spring break that is quickly approaching.
Math: This month we will be wrapping up some of our last math units and taking our final district checkpoint. After spring break, we will dive deep into math review to prepare for the SOL. Please continue to review at home using solpass.org and reach out if you would like any review materials sent home.
Reading: In reading, students will finish the last two weeks in Unit 5 and begin Unit 6. We will examine readings about the past to see how they support our understanding of the present. You can support your child at home by utilizing Wonders online to access adaptive learning materials and follow along with our current readings.
Writing: Students will write an expository essay about a topic utilizing multiple sources. Towards the end of the month we will use this class time to review for our upcoming SOLs.
Science: In science, we will finish our last unit and take our final district assessment. We will spend some time reviewing all science topics that were taught this year and focus on preparing students in Social Studies for their SOL.
Social Studies: In VA studies students will be learning about desegregation and the impact of influential Virginians. We will also discuss the branches of government & discuss the industries/global economy that Virginia plays a role in. Towards the end of the month students will complete our last PBA and begin our SOL review.
Thank you again for your support at home. We appreciate all your hard work that is contributing to your child’s success.
5th Grade: Happy April! It is hard to believe we are in the last 9 weeks of the year. Please be reminded that everyday is instructional and important! We need your student here to do the heavy lifting of LEARNING!
In math this month, we will complete the last of our measurement standards and we will begin the review for our SOL. We have been reviewing standards for weeks using the Daily Math Reviews provided by the district math department. You can also have your students review problems at home using www.testnav.com and www.solpass.org. Your child knows how to navigate these sites, as we use them on a regular basis.
In language arts this month we will take the Integrated Reading and Writing SOL.we will finish Unit 5 in Wonders. During every unit, we are reading grade-level texts and talking about our understanding of grade-level vocabulary, as well as being able to find evidence in the text to support comprehension questions. We also must write about the texts we read to show our understanding of all components of the text. Reading at home WITH your child, discussing what you’ve read, and even writing about it will support what we are doing daily. Kids are never too old to be read to! We are also working on preparing for our Reading SOL!
We will be finishing up our last few standards in Science which include: Plants, Animals and Ecosystems Please be reminded that 5th grade students do take a Science SOL. It encompasses 4th and 5th grade science standards. Students may access www.solpass.org to see all of the types of questions they may see in May. There are also games and activities! Again, another opportunity for great conversations with your child. What are you an expert on as you look at 5th grade SOLs?
Every day in 5th grade is BUSY! We are learning to be better thinkers, problem solvers, and readers. Learning to think critically is an essential life-skill! Please remember to let us know if you have any questions or concerns!

Title I:
Parents and caregivers play an essential role in their children learning to read. In order for children to be able to read and understand what they read, they must develop a foundation in both understanding language and the ability to hear and connect sounds to letters. Click on the link below to learn more about how you can help your child enhance their reading skills at home.
