Noon Message to Families
April 29, 2024

Cedar Hill ISD Families & Community,
We are in the final few weeks of the school year, which should be a time to focus on academic success and various celebrations.
While we will continue to honor those things, we are also reminded of the epidemic of gun violence in our country.
Two incidents involving gun violence and public schools occurred within 17 miles of Cedar Hill.
Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family of Etavion Barnes, the 18-year-old Bowie High School student who was killed by a classmate on Wednesday in Arlington.
On Thursday, two Roosevelt High School sophomore were shot in a vehicle, near the Cedar Crest Golf Course in Dallas. Their football coach, Terrence Lowery, was giving them a ride home when individuals from another vehicle opened fire. Thankfully, both young men are alive today, thanks to Lowery's quick decision making.
As a country, we must come together to ensure that more is being done to protect our young people.
Here in Cedar Hill ISD, we have been taking security measures to ensure the safety of our children -- which is always our top priority. We are doing this, while ensuring the social and emotional well-being of our scholars.
We are following up on every lead, every tip that staff or administration receives. CHISD has clear bag policies and security officers have tripled the number of door checks and security checks on the campuses. We are monitoring our hallways very closely. We take conflict resolution seriously and quash potential issues before they arise.
Thanks to the passage of the Voter Approved Tax Rate Election (VATRE) last fall, we have been able to hire additional Cedar Hill ISD Police Officers, which has allowed us to more than double the district's number of certified police officers.
We hope you will continue to pray for our communities, our state and nation, but also demand accountability from our elected leaders.
Dr. Gerald B. Hudson
Superintendent
Cedar Hill ISD
If your student is enrolled in CHISD on the last day of school in 2023 (May 26, 2023), then your student is categorized as a returning student. If your student attended CHISD during the 2021-2022 or any previous school year but transferred to another school outside of CHISD, they are new to the district.
Understanding Denial of Credit and Credit Recovery for High School Students
Today, we want to bring your attention to a crucial topic that could potentially affect the academic journey of some of our high school students: the denial of credit and the credit recovery process.
Denial of Credit:
Denial of credit occurs when a student does not meet the requirements to earn credit for a particular course. There are several reasons why a student may be denied credit, including but not limited to:
Failure to meet the minimum passing grade for the course.
Excessive absences or truancy.
Incomplete coursework or assignments.
Academic dishonesty or cheating.
Before we delve into the details, it's important for parents/guardians to understand that denial of credit can significantly impact a student's academic progress and graduation requirements. In such cases, students may need to participate in credit recovery to make up for the lost credits.
Credit Recovery:
Credit recovery allows students to retake a course or complete additional assignments to earn credit for a course they previously failed or were denied credit for. Credit recovery programs are designed to help students master the required content and demonstrate proficiency in the subject matter.
Cedar Hill ISD offers various credit recovery options to support students in their academic journey. These may include:
Online credit recovery courses.
After-school tutoring and support sessions.
Individualized learning plans tailored to meet the needs of each student.
Specialized programming for students out of their graduation cohort
It's crucial for parents/guardians to play an active role in the credit recovery process. Your involvement is key to your child's academic success. Here are some ways you can support your child with credit recovery:
Encourage them to take responsibility for their academic performance and seek help when needed.
Create a supportive learning environment at home where your child can focus on their studies and complete assigned coursework.
Communicate regularly with your child's teachers and school counselors to stay informed about their progress and any additional support they may need.
Provide encouragement and motivation to help your child stay focused and committed to completing their credit recovery requirements.
We understand that the denial of credit and credit recovery process can be challenging for students and families. We acknowledge these challenges and are here to help you navigate them with a positive mindset and a commitment to academic success.
If you have any questions or concerns about the denial of credit or credit recovery process, please feel free to reach out to our school administration or guidance counselors. We are committed to supporting you and your child every step of the way.
Thank you for your continued partnership in your child's education.
Delecia Key- Collegiate Academy/High School: Principal Secretary
Nominated by her peers for empowering others!
"Ms. Key goes above and beyond to make sure every student is welcomed into the building every morning. She always has a smile on her face. Sometimes you can hear her singing, even to the students. Whatever song she is singing, she incorporates the school or the students themselves into the song. She knows their names and engages them in conversation (or song) which makes them feel important and connected to the school. Every staff member and every parent receives the same warm, welcoming hello. You can tell she leads every day with her kind heart. You can hear her state " I just love these kids" with enthusiasm and joy. She loves that she has the opportunity to make someone's day and make them smile. She truly loves people with all her heart."
Tell us about your family
Its time for you to Shout Out your family. We will begin spotlighting families on social media during our Family First Week. This year our Family First Week will begin May 4th and will end on May 10th. We encourage our CHISD families to participate.
