Superintendent search
Board selects Wagner to lead district
At a special meeting on March 13, the Red Wing School Board voted unanimously to select Dr. Martina Wagner as the district’s next superintendent.
“Dr. Wagner has the knowledge, experience and relationship-building skills needed to lead Red Wing Public Schools,” said Jim Bryant, board chair. “In addition, her passion for education and serving all students make her an excellent fit. We look forward to working with her.”
Currently, she is the district's director of teaching & learning.
"“My relationships with students, staff, and community have begun and I plan to continue to forge forward by leading the school district into its next chapter," she said. “Red Wing Public Schools wants the next leader to ask the tough questions, challenge the status quo when it isn’t working, and call out long-standing biases, even when it’s uncomfortable. I am that leader. I believe I can lead Red Wing Public Schools with an equitable and academically enriched focus with grace, fidelity, and integrity."
Her career highlights include:
First grade teacher
English Learner teacher
Director of Metro ECSU, a nonprofit educational cooperative that provides high quality education services and programs
Targeted Services, alternative learning, Credit Recovery and summer programming
Educational equity and multilingual programming
American Indian and Migrant Education programming
She holds a doctorate in educational leadership and administration from Capella University. She holds elementary education, English language learning, principal and superintendent licensure.
The School Board entered into contract negotiations with Dr. Wagner, and expects to approve the contract at the March 20 School Board meeting. That will cap a superintendent search that officially began last fall.
The next phase will be transition planning.

Working odd jobs -- professionally
Michael Slagle and Masen Fish explore the trades

Repairing streets. Fitting pipes. Working in a power plant. These are just a few of the experiences under the belts of Michael Slagle and Masen Fish thanks to the Red Wing High School Winger Flight Path internship program.
Since the start of the semester last January, Michael and Masen have been switching positions by the week or sometimes by the day, working in a variety of trades-related companies across Red Wing. They often discover their location as the week begins, sometimes working together, sometimes not.
Their goal is to explore the workplace and find something to pursue after graduating high school. Masen said he has his heart set on electrical work, though over the course of his internship he’s also discovered interests in power plants and welding. Michael isn’t as decided. For him, the choice is less about what he does and more about the social and physical environment he does it in.
Both have relished the chance to visit so many places and gain experience in different things.
“You learn something new every week,” Masen notes.
Michael and Masen are two of four seniors in a new trades rotation internship this spring where they will be with 15 Red Wing area businesses in different trades and manufacturing roles. These four identified looking for trades-type careers but weren’t sure exactly what they wanted to do.
The four are part of a larger cohort of interns this spring with a variety of interests including health care, business, finance, education, government, firefighting, social work, and more. The goal is for seniors to connect with our local professionals in the vocational pathways the students are planning on pursuing to get a sense of what it can really look like and get recommendations for after graduation. Some students will continue on to further education while others will have the opportunity to continue on as full-time employees after completing high school.
Editor’s note: This is the first in a series of stories about RWHS students who are participating in the Winger Flight Paths internship program.

School Board
Budgeting tops Monday's agenda
School Board members will consider four budget scenarios for next school year when they meet at 5 p.m. Monday, March 20.
The Minnesota Legislature is debating several bills that would increase funding for public schools. One option would increase the per pupil rate by 3%.
Other bills seek to fill the gap between special education mandates and the monies local districts receive to provide those services. Districts across the state must use general fund dollars to make up the difference, which is called the cross subsidy. That runs $3 million to $4 million per year in Red Wing.
The workshop agenda also includes:
- Reports on behaviors at Twin Bluff Middle School and Red Wing High School.
- Review of the district organizational chart.
- Discussion of the School Board Handbook.
That agenda includes:
- The superintendent contract.
- A letter to the community regarding the superintendent search.
The meeting will be in Red Wing High School J-110. Enter through Door 10.
