Ms. Hawkins // Yearbook
The Maize Middle School yearbook staff earned All-Kansas status for its 2023 book, and it was the only middle school to receive the honor. Additionally, the book was featured in the prestigious Varsity Yearbook's Portfolio, volume 29. Individual staff members received photography awards, including two top 5 awards from the National Scholastic Press Association and five "Superior" ratings (the highest possible) from the Kansas Scholastic Press Association.

Mrs. Buchanan // Automation & Robotics
This year, our Eagles' Landing team recognized students who consistently showed the character traits we learned about each month. Each month, 14 students were named official "Students of the Month" and earned a Chick-Fil- A lunch. In addition, any student who is nominated by a teacher, or 3 of their peers, had a certificate taped onto their locker that recognized them. We have a lot of amazing students here at MMS, so we are glad we were able to put these things into place to recognize them!
For their final projects, robotics students competed in a game called "Triball Turnaround" where they had to build a bot to try to score triballs into the corner of the playing field, or in a mobile goal. There were 21 teams competing at Maize Career Academy on May 16th. Being successful in the game required them to use the mechanical and coding skills they've learned throughout the semester.
WatchDOGS
This year was our inaugural year of having the WatchDOGS (Dads of Great Students) program here at MMS. About once a month, we had a father figure come spend the day in classrooms, at lunch, and checking the hallways. Students love having a WatchDOG in their classroom, so we are hoping for even more participation next year!
Mrs. Zevenbergen // American History
8th grade American History classes had a fun year! At the beginning of the semesters, Officer Gabel shared about the Bill of Rights while at the end of the semesters, students built a car with legos to simulate a production line. Students also spent the semester practicing Claim-Evidence-Reasoning skills with primary sources.
Mrs. Greene // ESOL
English Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) has grown throughout the district! At MMS we are lucky to have 9 different countries represented and over 12 different languages spoken! Most of these students may have limited background in education, however, many of them are able to speak more than one language and are learning English as well! They are a very resilient group of students that persevere through challenges and are making great strides in their academic performance!
Mrs. Black // Language Arts
Blackout poems
Blackout poetry is when you take a written piece of text from a book, newspaper, or magazine and redact words, in order to come up with your very own poetry!
Mrs. Woodruff // Choir
Maize Middle School Choir competed in the Regional Competition on May, 4th! The choir received all 1 ratings and took 2nd place!
These kiddos have done an amazing job this year!
Mrs. Hatfield // Orchestra
The orchestra recently sent 9 students to represent MMS at the KASTA All-State Orchestra event in Hutchinson on April 20, where they played with high level middle school students from across the state. One of the highlights was performing with winds and percussion with a full-orchestra piece called the Great Locomotive Chase. They enjoyed working with Dr. Dirks from K-State, as their guest conductor.

Ms. Maze // Dance Team
The 2023/2024 school year was the inaugural year for the Maize Middle School Dance Team! The team, made up of 14 dancers was started by Head Coach Megan Maze, and Assistant Coach Hayley Dunitz.
The dancers performed at all home football, girls basketball, and boys basketball games, as well as pep assemblies throughout the year. The team was also invited to perform in the annual North Highschool Dance Team Showcase featuring area high school and college dance teams in November of 2023. The dancers did a phenomenal job representing Maize Middle School and the Maize School District at such an exciting event.
For the 2024/2025 school year, Coach Megan will be passing the coaching torch to Hayley Dunitz, who will take over as Head Coach, and Kayla Doyle as Assistant Coach. Thank you for your continued support of the Maize Middle School Dance Team! We are excited to watch this team build and grow!
Counseling Team
The Maize Middle School counseling team is growing by leaps and bounds! This year we have added a third counselor, a full time Behavioral Health Liaison, and a therapy dog!
Saying goodbye to these MMS staff members

It’s hard to believe the 2023-2024 school year is coming to an end! This year has truly flown by! I cannot begin to thank you all enough for the cherished memories and adventures I have endured while at Maize Middle School. Over the past four years at Maize Middle School and eleven years in the Maize District, I have grown tremendously as an educator and have been blessed being an educational leader here at MMS. The time has come for me to spread my wings and “fly the nest”. I have accepted the position as the Principal of Explorer Elementary in Goddard and will begin this next chapter of my life in July 2024. The Maize district will forever hold a very special place in my heart, and I hope to continue to be part of your child’s educational journey.

I have been fortunate to spend the last 2 years at Maize Middle School and work with some great educators. These experiences have helped give me the tools to continue to grow my profession and hopefully some gain some longtime professional relationships. I look forward to seeing Maize Middle School's continued success over the years!

Joyce Schreiner
I started teaching in Maize in 1995 and moved to this building in 2006. My husband, Monty, was also a teacher in this building so I worked in the same department as him until he retired in 2021. I really enjoyed the years when my two children, Gabrielle and Chase, attended school here as well, as I was able to get to know all of their friends. The building has been transformed in my time here, we went through 2 major renovations while we were still having school. I have been a volleyball coach for most of the years I have been in Maize. I was the STUCO sponsor at MMS for several years and enjoyed keeping the tradition of the 8th grade breakfast as well as planning food drives and parties for the students. MMS has felt like home for many years, I will definitely miss being part of this family.

After sixteen years I finally get to graduate Middle School!! In all seriousness I am incredibly grateful for my time at MMS. I remember my first day of school at MMS teaching sixth grade general music! We started off with dancing to the infamous "Napoleon Dynamite" dance! From that moment we were off and running!
I truly got to "bloom" where I was planted. To return back to my alma mater and not only get to work with my former teachers Mrs. Prater and Mrs. Sims, but also to be mentored by them as well was a true blessing.
I have so many favorite memories from our first musical Seussical Jr. to Guys and Dolls Jr, (working with my mom, who was an English teacher at MMS)- to the annual Holiday Tour and Worlds of Fun competition. All of these experiences have shaped me personally and professionally.
At the end of the day it boils down to the kiddos and the experiences we have gotten to have together. To see the students grow, become confident, establish friendships, try something new, and push themselves to be a little better than when they started! This is why I LOVE what I GET to do!
It's a bittersweet moment to be graduating! I am so excited for the journey that is ahead and honored to move into the MHS choir position. Thank you for the incredible journey at MMS! My time has been filled with invaluable experiences, professional growth, and personal development.
