Massillon City Schools PBIS News
4th Quarter Edition 2024
What Is PBIS?
PBIS (Positive Behavioral Interventions & Supports) is a system that our schools use to support students in many ways. PBIS consists of clear behavioral expectations, teaching and re-teaching these expectations, and acknowledging students for meeting these expectations. PBIS supports are tailored to meet the needs of all students. The goal of PBIS is to create a positive school climate that leads to safety and success for all students.

A Safe Summer Starts With You
As we approach summer we are always looking for fun activities to keep our kids busy. More activities come with the risk of safety. Here are some things to think about as you plan ways to keep your kids active during the summer. Keep your kids safe in the heat by ensuring they are drinking enough water, using sunscreen, and taking breaks in the shade so they do not get overheated. When swimming or near water make sure you monitor kids as they are enjoying the water to cool down on those hot days. As your children are actively riding bikes, ensure your child is wearing a helmet and aware of their surroundings. Keep your kids safe online as they are using their tablets/computers this summer by limiting screen time and ensuring you are monitoring what they are viewing.
Stay Safe, Tigers!!!
Boosting Attendance: A Key to Student Success
As we move into the next school year, our district will continue to emphasize the importance of regular attendance. Research shows that students who have never been chronically absent are:
- 9 times more likely to graduate from high school on time.
- 6.7 times more likely to read on grade level by the end of third grade.
Chronic absenteeism is defined as missing 10% of school at any point in the school year, which adds up to about 18 days throughout the year.
We are excited to announce that our district is participating in the Stay In The Game! initiative. Stay In The Game! is a dynamic statewide movement and learning network designed to dramatically improve student attendance. This initiative supports attendance campaigns across the state, impacting nearly 200,000 Ohio students and counting.
The network partners include:
- Cleveland Browns Foundation
- Ohio Department of Education & Workforce
- Proving Ground
- Columbus Crew Foundation
Massillon City Schools is proud to be a learning district within this network. Through this partnership, we will continue to align our attendance efforts.
Let's work together to ensure our students Stay In The Game!
But First, Be Safe!
As summer approaches it is important to keep children’s safety in mind as they will be spending more time at home. It is important to make sure all safety measures are in place such as making sure the first aid kits are filled, items that kids can be hurt by are put away, and smoke detectors have working batteries. With the warmer weather, kids spend more time outside, and the number of child injuries increases as well. It is important to have your child use sunblock when they are going to be outside during the day to protect against harmful burns. One favorite activity in the summer is bike riding. All riders need to wear the appropriate safety equipment and know the safety rules for riding a bike. Summer weather also provides swimming opportunities; it is important that children are supervised at all times when swimming or playing in water. Stay safe and have a great summer!

Family PBIS Resources
The following link will access a site that provides resources and information you may find helpful. This resource includes district and county resources as well as information about how you can support school attendance.
The district expectations were developed by the district PBIS team to guide our students and staff to become better educators, students, friends and people. All buildings in the district have matrices in the hallways to remind students and staff of the everyday expectations in all areas of the buildings.
