What's new with Watkins Middle?
A weekly reflection and preview of all things WMS
WMS updates and reminders
- This week students will be participating the Erica's lighthouse program as a part of the state mandate surrounding the 'Save students Act'. This program aims to raise awareness about mental health and depression. See details about this program in this informational letter from our school social worker Mrs. Werner.
- Friday the PTO will be servicing ice cream sundaes during lunches for those students that earned honor roll during the fist quarter.
- The OSU field trip for 7th graders will resume next week. We need families to fill out this form to share whether or not their child will need a school lunch for the trip. Students will attend the trip on dates according to their Science teachers.
November 12- Redfern class periods 1, 3, 5 and Walter Honors Science 8 students
November 13-Redfern class periods 6, 7, 8
- We were unable to get through all of the homerooms for sixth and seventh graders this past week. Porters will be returning for the last 51 students who didn't get the opportunity to purchase items as a part of the PBIS incentive.
- With the holiday season arriving we recognize that not all students have the same opportunities to enjoy the holidays. If your family is in need of assistance please fill out this form.
- In an effort to gain a greater insight into the student perspective, WMS students will be asked to complete a survey concerning their perspectives on building culture. This survey will be shared during social studies classes and should only take a minute or two to complete. Our hope to to solicit student feedback to make adjustments that better serve our student population.
Summarization skills
Students in Mr. Harrison’s 8th grade ELA classes are learning summarizing skills by verbally retelling a day from the past including ONLY important events.
6th grade Humanities
This week is an exciting one in Ms. Lundberg and Ms. Brandon’s Humanities class! Students have been learning about the ancient civilization of Mesopotamia. They are discovering more about life at that time through readings and interactive activities. Additionally, we have started our class book of “City of the Plague God” this week.
Happy Halloween
Ms. Spindler’s ELA classes put a fun twist on written responses and inferential thinking this week with Halloween themed activities.
Surviving Middle School for Parents
This week's executive functioning graphic touches on time management. What parent has not been frustrated at their child's lack of urgency to complete tasks? Does your kiddo miss the mark when underestimating how long a task may take? Take a look at this week's tips to support your child.
