Reminders to our Mindful School Ohana
- We want all children to be dropped off and picked up in a safe and efficient manner. Your cooperation is greatly appreciated to reduce the stress in the auto line. To get as many cars into our drop-off and pick-up areas, please pull all the way up to the top of our driveway. Stopping at the cafeteria door with no cars in front of you creates unneeded backup of vehicles that extends onto Leahi Avenue. Also be aware that no person shall operate a motor vehicle while using a mobile electronic device. Refer to the graphic below that references Hawaii State Law.
- Students in grades 3-5 who have their pick-up in the Leahi Field zone will be moved to the front parking lot 15 minutes after the end of the school day (2:30 pm on M, T, Th, F and 1:45 pm on W).
- Our hallways and walkways get extremely congested during the morning drop-off and pick-up periods. In our efforts to prevent accidents, please walk your bikes, skateboards or scooters when on campus. This applies to everyone, children and adults alike.
- Our common areas around the campus are reserved for our A+ and after-school private provider programs. Fellowship between families are always highly encouraged, but please hang out at other spots off-campus like the Kapiolani Park Annex across Leahi Avenue or at the nearby Paki Park playground.
- If your child is eating school meals, please remember to deposit money into their lunch account.
Message from Waikīkī Counselor Mr. Tomasu
Aloha everyone,
My name is Aaron Tomasu and I’m the new school counselor here at Waikīkī Elementary. The students know me as Mr. Tomasu or Mr. T for short. This is my 15th year at the Department of Education. I was previously the school counselor at Maunawili Elementary. My wife and I just celebrated 12 years of marriage, and keep busy with our 3 kiddos at home. I hold a Master’s Degree in Counseling Psychology from Chaminade University and a Hawaii School Counseling license.
My office at Waikīkī Elementary is the shipping container located behind the cafeteria. This office, nicknamed “The Hub”, represents a professional philosophy: to believe in what you see and can’t see yet. Though it looks plain on the outside (for now), The Hub houses various counseling tools and resources I’ve used with students over the years. Some of these students came in with different challenges or a defeated look. In working with these students, a simple phrase of “don’t stop believing” would be the beginning of their successful Journey (see what I did there)...or realizing the power of yet (I can’t do this YET). I like to use creative strategies to engage the students and staff. Please feel free to stop by for a hello or a quick chat, I’m looking forward to embracing the Waikīkī community.

Message from Waikīkī Counselor Ms. Hirose
Hello! My name is Mona Hirose and I’m the new part-time school counselor here at Waikīkī Elementary School. The kids like to call me Ms. Mona. I am on campus Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays and am available to both students and parents! You can reach me at the Mindful Cove located near the administrative building.
This past May I received my Bachelor of Science in Molecular and Cell Biology and a Minor in Psychology from the University of Hawai’i at Manoa. I am currently pursuing a Masters in Counseling Psychology at the University of Hawai’i at Hilo remotely.
I am committed to being a school counselor accessible to all students and hope to provide a safe space for students to be themselves. I emphasize the importance of listening to students from a non-judgmental perspective and providing inclusive care to students of all backgrounds to ensure that each student has what he needs to succeed in school. I value working as part of a team with parents/guardians, teachers, interventionists, and more. I look forward to meeting everyone and joining the Waikīkī school community!

Hawaii Public School's Here to Help Website
The Hawaiʻi State Department of Education (HIDOE) in partnership with the Cook Center for Human Connection, a national non-profit family foundation, will be providing families and staff statewide with access to ParentGuidance.org, a 24/7 online platform that offers parents and staff with resources and support for student mental health.
ParentGuidance.org works with schools and their communities nationwide, empowering families to help children thrive through its mental health resources. Hawaiʻi parents and school staff will have free access to resources including:
- Regular one-on-one parent coaching for parents, families and school staff
- Access to over 30 mental health series virtual seminars
- Online lessons led by licensed therapists
- "Ask a Therapist," a frequently updated question and answer forum
"As part of our ongoing commitment to the well-being of our students, we are excited to introduce this new resource designed specifically to support families in addressing student mental health," Annie Kalama, Assistant Superintendent of the HIDOE Office of Student Support Services said. "Parents play a cruical role in their child's overall mental health and this resource will help to provide them with the tools, information and support they need to foster positive mental and emotional growth for their child."
According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, child and adolescent healthcare professionals are treating youth with soaring rates of depression, anxiety, trauma, loneliness, and suicidality, creating the potential for lasting impacts on themselves, their families, and their communities.
"We are proud to collaborate with the Hawaiʻi State Department of Education for the benefit of their families and school staff. This shows that they truly care about the role of parents in their children's emotional well-being," said Anne Brown, president and CEO of Cook Center for Human Connection. "By providing education, resources, and direct support to families, we look forward to helping the people who love and care for their children most: the parents."
HIDOE joins 360 other school districts that have partnered with the Cook Center, bringing this access to mental health services to more than 3.3 million families across 46 states.
