Principal's Message
Dear McKenzie Families,
Thank you to the parent volunteers that put together the amazing Variety Show, Game On. An extra special thank you to Jaimie Korelitz (co-director), Kathy Stofan (co-director), Katie Colt (co-director), Lorenza Amigo (co-producer), and Ariel Knauff (co-producer), for organizing, directing, and producing a momentous community-building event that went above and beyond our expectations.
And thank you to our McKenzie staff for participating and representing the amazing, dedicated staff at McKenzie.
We are already looking forward to next year's show!
Have a great weekend,
Dana
IAR - Illinois Assessment of Readiness
Illinois Assessment of Readiness (IAR) is the state mandated assessment for students enrolled in public schools. A combination of both qualitative and quantitative data forms a complete picture of a child’s academic progress. IAR contributes one data point among many others. Although this assessment is administered in the spring, the results arrive from the state during the following academic year.
McKenzie School will administer IAR assessments in English Language Arts (ELA) and Math to 3rd/4th grade students between April 1st-3rd and April 8th-10th. Please limit doctor appointments and other family obligations during this testing window. Also, there is nothing to do to prepare for this test besides a good night's sleep and a healthy breakfast!
Specific dates and times for your child’s classroom will be sent by your child’s teacher.
A Note from McKenzie's Library: Local Author Visits
National Library Week is approaching on April 6th-12th. Wilmette Public Library will be hosting a Cartoonist Club on April 9th. On April 10th, special guests Raina Telgemeier and Scott McCloud will be joining the fun at the Skokie School Auditorium! If you are interested, please use this website.
Kate Hannigan will also be here again for an Author Visit at the Wilmette Public Library on April 11th! Please use this link if you want to sign up your student and attend another great presentation!
Related Arts Spotlight
We’re excited to introduce our Related Arts Spotlight newsletter! This weekly update will highlight the exciting activities and learning happening in our related arts classes, including art, music, PE, Spanish, Tech and Library. It’s a great way to stay informed about the creative and engaging experiences your child is having in these special areas.
D39 Updates and Information
Register Now for the 2025-26 Academic Year
Registration remains open for the 2025-26 academic year. Registering your child(ren) now helps us to staff our schools with the correct number of class sections and the very best teachers around! Please help us plan to continue this excellence by completing your registration now.
ALL students must register, including new and returning students. Additional information regarding returning and new student enrollment is available online.
Registration for returning students can be completed via the PowerSchool Parent Portal and choose “registration.”
Registration for our new full-day kindergarten program is open now, as well. Kindergarten registration numbers are crucial to our planning for kindergarten sections and staffing. If you have an incoming kindergartener or know someone who does, please encourage completion of the registration process as soon as possible.
Registration is also open for our Lechner Early Education Program (LEEP) for three- and four-year-old preschool program.
The 2025-26 academic year calendar is available online.
Schedule Your Elementary Parent/Teacher Conferences
Registration is now open for Spring parent/teacher conferences (March 20-21) for our families with elementary school students. You received an email last Friday with instructions on how to reserve your conference time online. Video conferences are encouraged and set as the default within the registration system; however, requests for in-person conferences can be accommodated.
Parent Education Events
Join us on Wednesday, March 12 at 11 am for District 39’s next Parent Education event titled “Parenting Kids with Big Emotions and Big Behaviors.” Navigating children’s upsets and tantrums are a part of parenthood. You want to support your child’s feelings and not lose your patience, but when they don’t listen or follow the rules, what do you do? This session will equip you with tools to parent with respect. You will learn how to access your calm, how to respond rather than react, and raise children who care and contribute. Come to grow your parenting confidence and create more peace in your family! Registration for this event, which will be held virtually via Zoom, is now open. Please visit our Parent Education webpage for our full schedule of events as well as archived recordings of past events.
District 39 Summer Enrichment Program Registration
Registration for the D39 Summer Enrichment Program is open. This fun and educational program runs from July 2-31 and offers a variety of academic and interest-based courses for students currently in grades K-7. This year, courses for students in grades K-3 will be held at McKenzie Elementary School while programs for students currently in grades 4-7 will be held at Highcrest Middle School. Please view our list of offered courses and visit our D39 Summer Enrichment Program website for more details on this wonderful summer option.
D39 SEL News
Across the grade levels, the SEL lessons students engage in help them learn about themselves, their emotions, and their families and traditions. These lessons help students understand other perspectives and develop their sense of belonging in the larger community.
Learning about many different traditions that are the same as, and different from your own helps your child increase their understanding of the world around them. This month we have the opportunity to learn more about Ramadan, which began at the start of March and ends at the end of the month with the holiday of Eid-al-Fitr. During this holiest and most important month for Muslims around the world, many practice fasting during daylight hours. Enjoy reading a book together about Ramadan to learn more! District 39 staff are aware that many students will be celebrating Ramadan, and are prepared to make accommodations for students to be able to participate. Please make sure you reach out and let us know if your child is participating so that we can support them as needed.
As a reminder, this calendar provides dates and information on many celebratory dates for students and staff of District 39.
