Seniors - October is Michigan College Month! Part of the celebration month is that many Michigan colleges do not have application fees, and some that do are waiving the fee during a specific period of time during the month of October! This can mean big savings to your family in application fees. Please reference this document for fee waiver information.

Benefits to applying in October:

1. Application fee waivers saving approximately $25 - $100 per application.

2. Get your application in for an early decision.

3. Possibility of a deferment over a denial. This gives you time to present a new GPA and possibly retake a standardized test for a higher score.

4. You can make a more informed financial decision because the earlier you are accepted and have your FAFSA complete, the sooner you will receive

financial aid award letters and know your detailed funding.

Juniors and Seniors - There are a few remaining spots available to attend the college fair at Mott Community College on October 12th. If you are interested, please see Mrs. Fagerstrom in the counseling office.

Clio High School will be hosting a career and college fair to wrap up October, where we will be celebrating those heading to college, trades, and the workforce. This gives the students the opportunity to explore universities, trades, military, and workforce occupations that they may not have thought of. This event will take place November 9. 2023.

Students and families looking for help paying for college are encouraged to register for a Virtual Financial Aid Presentation provided by Michigan Department of Treasury’s MI Student Aid team.

Participants will be able to gather information on the following financial aid topics:

• FAFSA application information
• Federal financial aid programs
• State financial aid programs
• Scholarship searching resources

As we come to the end of the month of September I wanted to provide some data with you from academics, attendance and discipline. This month we have had a focus on attendance and the importance of getting to class on time. Our time is precious and we want to make sure that we make the most of every one of our 180 days together. We had a healthy competition this month and the seminar class with the highest percent of students present and on time won a popsicle reward on Thursday. Congratulations to Mrs. Charles’ class for winning with 97.7%!

Discipline Data

Some important highlights from discipline data from the month of September:

• The majority of our referrals to date are from cell phones. As a reminder students should have their phones away and out of sight during class time. First offense is student pickup and second is parent.

• I, along with many staff members, have had conversations about the proper “time and place” for some clothing and language choices that are made by our young adults. Clothing and language should be appropriate and if not is addressed as needed. Please help us to model this behavior.

Academic Data

The grades for all students are shown to the right for the school year to date. Many students are off to a great start! As we are entering week 5 of instruction many classes will have their first larger assessment coming up. If a student needs help they can utilize seminar to ask questions to their teacher and independently work to further their learning. After school tutoring is also an option from Monday -Thursday from 2:30-4:30. See the academic data from the month of September below.

I know that I have mentioned the importance of showing GRIT, and how it is a life-long trait that is developed through hard work and effort. Failure is a necessary ingredient in developing the GRIT mindset, even though it is the toughest ingredient to digest. Building the capacity of GRIT allows all of us to pick ourselves up when life has knocked us down, taking every step to battle adversity when it rears its ugly head, and building important resilience layers that turn us all into problem solvers.

GRIT is determination. It is that never-quit attitude that leads to success in whatever you choose to do in life. GRIT builds an "individual code" in all of us that helps us face our fears, ask for help when we are in need, and embrace "difficulty" as a way to grow!

As we continue to go through this school year, take some time to measure how your "GRIT Meter" is showing growth and improvement. If we keep adding to it, individual success will follow. Remember........... FAILURE IS A NECESSARY PART OF LEARNING, BUT FAILING TO TRY IS NOT AN OPTION.
