Scituate's Chapter of The National Honor Society
Seniors who are not already inducted into NHS, and whose cumulative GPA is 3.9 or higher, received an email on Thursday about potential membership in the National Honor Society. Those seniors were asked to respond to the email by Sept 16.
Current NHS members are expected to actively check the NHS google classroom for important information about community service, scholarships, and chapter events.
Juniors who qualify to be considered for NHS will be invited to apply after the end of first semester.
Freshmen and sophomores are not considered for membership in NHS until the end of first semester of their junior year.
Questions should be sent to advisor Mrs. Stormont at maggie.stormont@scituateschoolsri.net

From the Academy of Engineering
Introduction to Engineering Design: This week we learned how to draft sketches of objects, as viewed from multiple directions. We started by looking at geometric shapes built from blocks in the motif of Tetris. Then we moved on to converting objects, as seen from an off-angle, into their constituent views. In the picture below, we see Caleb Marchand and Carson Rinaldi showing off their capabilities, even with only three working hands between them.
Principles of Engineering
In class we learned about simple machines: levers, pulleys, ramps, and the like that generate mechanical advantage. In a manner of speaking, they "make hard things easy and easy things quick." In the picture below we see Aiden Lobao demonstrating just how much rope one needs to take up on a complex pulley system to take advantage of that mechanical advantage.
From the History Department
Mr. Murphy’s US History students read and analyzed the Articles of Confederation. Then summarized them into their own words on the whiteboard.

Student community service needed!!
Every year we hold a book sale/fund raiser at the Art Festival. We could use student help, especially during the following times:
Friday October 11, 9:00AM until 1:00PM, and until 4:00PM if able, moving bins of books from a storage unit in the back of the library to the the tent in the front.
Monday, after 4:00PM, moving the empty bins back, inside the library.
We could also use help during the book sale on the three days, basically organizing the tables.
The biggest help we could use is on the Friday morning, moving the bins of the books.
Community Service paperwork will be provided.
Lynn Dion can be contacted at scituatemusic@hotmail.com
Thank you for any help with this project.

West Nile Virus in Rhode Island
Reduce the risk of West Nile virus (WNV) and Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE) after mosquitoes tested positive for the diseases. WNV is most commonly spread to people by the bite of an infected mosquito, and mosquito season in Rhode Island runs from summer through fall. Mosquitoes are most active at dawn and dusk, in the shade, and when temperatures are above 55°F.
Here are some precautions that everyone can take to reduce the risk of WNV:
- Use protective clothing
Have students wear long-sleeved shirts and pants.
Use bug spray
Use an EPA-approved bug spray with DEET (20–30% strength), picaridin, IR3535, oil of lemon eucalyptus, or paramenthane. Don't use bug spray with DEET on children under two months old.
Maintain screens
Ensure that window and door screens are in good condition and don't have holes or be loose.
Reduce standing water
Remove standing water from containers like buckets, pots, wheelbarrows, boats, and pools.\
Clogged rain gutters and puddles on tarps can also support mosquito larvae.

Non-Discrimination
The Scituate School Department has released an updated non-discrimination policy. Please note that our Scituate High School 2018-2019 student and parent handbook was printed before the new statement was released. Therefore, the non-discrimination policy in this year's handbook is out of date. The current policy with updates is as follows:

The following person has been designated to handle inquiries regarding the non-discrimination policies: Equal Employment Officer, P.O.
