Causes of the American Revolution
The American Revolution was between the thirteen colonies and Great Britain. The conflict was built up by many small problems that angered the colonies. King George the III was in middle of it when he put taxes on the colonies items why eventually caused the colonists to revolt and declare independence. The colonies declared independence on July 4th, 1776.
Navigation Acts 1650s-1700s
The navigation acts was the first of many things that angered the colonists. The Navigation Acts forbid the 13 colonies from trading with foreign Country's. They also made items that were shipped to the colonies, would have to first go to the Mother Country. The British did this to maximize the amount of income for the Country.
The Proclamation of 1763
The proclamation of 1763 was created after the French and Indian War. King George issued the proclamation so that he could decrease the debts of the French and Indian war for Britain. They also prevented colonists from settling west of the Appalachian Mountains because they didn't want another war with the Natives. This made the colonists mad because they wanted to settle on the land.
Stamp Act of 1765
The Stamp act of 1765 put a tax on all legal papers that were issued in the colonies. They created the proclamation to help pay off the debt of the French and Indian war like the Proclamation of 1763. The Committee of Correspondence reacted to this by boycotting certain goods and spread the word of the act. The Sons of liberty responded to the act by protesting and using violence against the British Police.
The Quartering Act 1765
The Quartering act of 1765 was put into effect right after the stamp act. They put the act into place to increase the number of redcoats in the colonies. The act forced any colonists, at any time, to be forced to house a redcoat. If you refused you were thrown in Jail and usually not released.
Townshend Acts of 1767
The Townshend Act of 1767 put taxes on a number of items. Some of these included imported tea, glass, and paper. The Daughter of Liberty responded to this by making their own clothing and boycotting certain products. The act was eventually repealed in 1770 but it continued to have an imported tea tax. This event eventually led to the Boston Tea Party.
Boston Massacre
The Boston Massacre happened on March 5, 1770. The event happened when British troops were in front of colonists that were protesting. Snowballs were thrown, and the redcoats fired into a crowed of unarmed colonists and they ended up killing 5 people. This is one of the main events that sparked a revolution in the colonies.
Coercive Acts
The Coercive Acts were can the Intolerable acts by the colonists. This act stopped trade between Britain and the Colonies, and it did not allow town meetings. It also gave Britain more control of the colonies and strengthen the Quartering Act. This sparked a revolutionary spirit in the colonies.
Tea Act and Tea Party
The tea act restricted the 13 colonies from getting there tea from anywhere except the West Indies Tea Company. This angered the colonists even though this made the tea cheaper. In fact, member of the Sons of Liberty sneaked onto a Tea Company boat dressed as Native Americans on December 16, 1773. They then mad revolution history as they threw 342 crates of tea into the Boston Harbor in rage. This was one of the main event of the American Revolution.
