Recognizing School Counselors
In February, Pasco School District annually celebrates National School Counseling Week to honor and acknowledge the significant contributions of our school counselors. These dedicated professionals play a crucial role in guiding students toward academic success, fostering social and emotional growth, and assisting with college and career planning.
A special thank you to Timothy Haugen, Kelly Longsdorff, and Kristy Piceno for their attendance, and gratitude to all those who couldn't join. Your unwavering support for Pasco students is truly appreciated.
State of the School Reviews 2024
During a study session, Mira Gobel, Assistant Superintendent of Schools & Social Emotional Learning, provided insights into the 2024 State of the School Reviews. Teams from Angelou, Emerson, Franklin, and Markham Elementary Schools presented their respective school improvement efforts, benchmark and progress monitoring data related to student learning, and outlined school improvement goals aligned with the district’s Outrageous Outcomes to the Board in group sessions. Board members engaged in table group discussions for the presentations, allowing them time to ask questions.
Superintendent’s Student Action Council February Update
PSD Student Board Representatives Kimberly Joya Manzanarez, Meia Ng, and Samantha Quiroga and Superintendent Michelle Whitney presented the outcome of the Student Action Council meeting held on January 24, 2024.
At request of the Pasco School District Board of Directors, the Superintendent Student Action Council deliberated on topics including multiple-year terms for Student Board Representatives, advisory votes for Student Board Representatives, and considerations for Pasco School District's student voice program when adding Sageview High School and Orion High School.
A consensus of the Superintendent Student Action Council recommended maintaining single year terms for Student Board Representatives with the option of re-applying for a second term. They also suggested increasing the number of representatives to four with the addition of the new high schools, with one each for the three comprehensive high schools and one for the small innovative high school (Delta, New Horizons, and Orion High Schools). Additionally, students proposed adding an advisory vote system, where Student Board Representatives bring topics to the Superintendent Student Action Council for study and discussion. The council then votes on the topic, and representatives convey the results to the Board of Directors. This proposed approach would undergo an annual review, with adjustments made based on input from Student Board Representatives.
The Board accepted the Superintendent Action Council recommendation on terms and will maintain single-year terms for Student Board Representatives with the option of re-applying for a second term. Advisory votes and adding an additional Student Board Representative position will be discussed further at a future board meeting.
High School Boundary Process: Update and Round 2 Boundary Map Presentation
Jake Stueckle, PSD Director of Secondary Instruction Services, provided the Board with an update on the district's progress in establishing new boundaries for comprehensive high schools.
Mr. Stueckle outlined the timeline and guiding principles that steer the boundary creation process. He provided information about the initial draft boundary scenarios, A, B, and C, which were available for community feedback both in-person and online from January 25 to February 13. A summarized overview of community input for each scenario was also provided.
Additionally, Mr. Stueckle presented information about the second round of boundary scenarios, A and D, which evolved from the initial community feedback. These scenarios are currently open for feedback until March 21 through both an online survey and in-person meetings.
Upon collecting feedback from the second round, adjustments will be integrated, and new scenario versions will be introduced. The third round of scenarios will open for community feedback on March 28.
