Student Services Department Transition Evenings
The Student Services Department is always aiming to improve and provide support for not only our students but to our families. Starting this school year, they are excited to introduce a new format for presentations aimed at helping families better prepare for their studentβs transition to the next school building within the district. These presentations aim to provide valuable information on differences from building to building, will dive into support services available at each grade level, and strategies to help ensure a smooth transition for your student. Families will also have the opportunity to ask questions and learn about the resources and programs that will be available to their student(s) as they progress through the districtβs educational pathways.
If your student is on an IEP or 504 plan and is currently enrolled at Placentino:
- Placentino: Preschool to Kindergarten Families on February 25th at 6:30pm @ Placentino
- Grades 2nd to 3rd on March 3rd at 6:30pm @ Miller
Reminders from the Health Office
- If your student has borrowed clothing from the Health Office, please wash those clothes and return as soon as possible.
- Please remember to pack a snack and water bottle every day for your student.

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Read-Alouds π
Preschool and Kindergarten
During the month of February teachers and students in preschool and kindergarten will engage in a read aloud of We Move Together by Kelly Fritsch, Anne McGuire, and Eduardo Trejos. We Move Together is an exploration of all the ways that people navigate through the spaces around them and a celebration of the relationships built along the way. The book follows a mixed-ability group of kids as they creatively negotiate everyday barriers and find joy and connection in disability culture and community.
Conversation Starters:
- What are some of the different ways the kids are moving in the opening scene? What helps you move? What do all kids need to help them to move?
- The kid on the horizon needs to move slow. What do the friends do next? What happens after the kids slow down?
- What is going on in the ice cream shop scene? Whatβs the problem? How might we fix the problem of the ice cream shop step? Ideas?
First and Second Grade
During the month of February teachers and students in first and second grade will engage in a read aloud of Just Ask!: Be Different, Be Brave, Be You by Sonia Sotomayor. Feeling different, especially as a kid, can be tough. But in the same way that different types of plants and flowers make a garden more beautiful and enjoyable, different types of people make our world more vibrant and wonderful.
Conversation Starters:
- Sonia explains that if she doesnβt know or understand something, she just asks! It is important to make sure that we are asking kind and thoughtful questions. What are some good ways to ask a question?
- We were introduced to several kids in this book. Try going through each of the characters we met and thinking of one thing you have in common with them! Do you both like music? Do you both feel frustrated sometimes?
- Do you ever feel nervous to ask questions? What are some things that hold you back, and what is some advice you would give to someone who wants to ask a question but feels shy?
- Lots of the characters in the book were happy to share a little bit about themselves- they just needed to be asked! Is there anything that you wish more people asked about you?
