Helping the Environment One Food Scrap at a Time Helping the Environment One Food Scrap at a Time

Fourteenth Street School has started composting! Since January 21st, students have been separating their food scraps from non-compostable items at breakfast, snack, and lunch. As a result, each week we are filling two 35-gallon bins with food scraps that will decompose into usable soil, thereby reducing methane gas emissions and helping to mitigate global warming. The bins are picked up weekly by 1 Earth Composting and taken to a composting site. In the spring, we will receive a yard of compost for our gardens. Many thanks to the Natural Resources Council of Maine for awarding us the grant that has made our partnership with 1 Earth Composting possible!

Every Friday we randomly select a prize winner (one per class) from among the students who received a RAM award that week for being a responsible worker, acting respectfully, having a mighty positive attitude, and/or staying safe. Selected students get to choose a small toy, read to a class, help Mr. Deane, eat lunch with a friend, help Ms. McCorrison in the office, eat lunch with me, or help Ms. Walls in the kitchen. February 3 winners were: Felix Galbiati, Aurora Halstead, Jem Hinrichs, Greta Light, Veda Light, Andrew Newman, Violet Quarles, Reese Schiller, Wilder Stone, and Madelyn Yankum. Pictured here are winners from the week of February 24: Front row: Ted Bernosky, Tucker Bayrd, Blaze Davis, Winn Mallory-MacDonald; Back row: Jonah Badger, Claire Woodman, Brady Weerden, Jack Stephenson, Maisie Fourcier; Not pictured: Thirdy Poso.

Buckle Up!

Snow gear can make booster seats and seatbelts challenging to use, but did you know that 52% of car accidents occur within five miles of a driver's home? Please take the extra time; we'll wait! 😊

Head Lice Tips

Head lice are ubiquitous in winter! Here are ways to minimize the spread of these pesky creatures:

  • Do daily head checks.
  • Teach children to avoid sharing things that have been on or near another child’s head, including hair brushes, combs, hats, helmets, towels, scarves, coats, sweatshirts, etc.
  • If your child has long hair, pull it back into a ponytail for school.
  • Regularly clean items that your child’s head has direct contact with, including car seats, pillows, and headphones, especially if these items are being shared with other children.
  • As tedious as it may be, comb and remove nits for at least 2-3 weeks to ensure the head lice are completely gone.
  • Head lice can be resistant to over-the-counter treatments such as RID and Nix. As a result, these products may not be effective in treating head lice. If you have used these products and they have not been effective, please contact your physician or school nurse for alternative treatments.
