Letter from your School Counselors
AES Parents,
In 2015, the Oregon legislature passed SB 856, also known as Erin’s Law. Erin’s Law requires the development and adoption of child sexual abuse prevention programs for K-12 students in all Oregon public schools. The curriculum used at Aumsville Elementary to meet SB 856 requirements is called “Safer, Smarter Kids”. This developmentally-appropriate abuse prevention curriculum will arm your child with the necessary skills to help avoid sexual abuse and access help if they are ever victimized.
These lessons will be taught by Mrs. Delamarter for students in grades K-2 and Mr.Nelson for students in grades 3-5. The first lesson will be taught the week of 04/08/24 with lessons concluding after 4-6 consecutive weeks. (# of lessons varies by grade level)
If you would like to opt your student out of these lessons for any reason, please notify their classroom teacher prior to 04/05/24.
Respectfully,
Andrew Nelson, School Counselor
Cindy Delamarter, Child Development Specialist

Read Every Day April Challenge “Leer Todos los Días” el desafío de abril
In April, grade alike classes will be competing to see who can read the most. The rules will remain the same for Read Every Day. You must read at least 15 minutes on 5 different days to count towards the goal. The class from each grade level who has the most students turn in a Read Every Day Reading Log, with at least 15 minutes of reading, on 5 different days will be selected to have a chip party. To increase the likelihood of winning, read every day, for 5 days in a row, for at least 15 minutes, and immediately turn in your reading log after finishing. Get a new log and new books and start the process
again for the whole month.
Good Luck to everyone and may the most dedicated readers win!
Letter From your School Nurses
Letter from the School Nurses Parents and Guardians of Cascade Students, It is unfortunately lice season. We are seeing an uptick in these little pests and we need your help! Per CDC and ODE regulations we can not notify families of where the lice is being seen so we would like to encourage all parents to check their students' heads regularly. If there are nits apparent and stuck to the shaft of your student’s hair we ask that you treat your student and remove EVERY nit. If you do not, you most likely will not resolve the problem, EVEN when you treat the students head with whatever product you are using, you still should remove the nits. It is evident that lice has become resistant to many of the lice products sold on the store shelves. There are other ways to get rid of the lice with natural remedies. If you’d like more information regarding this you may reach out to the nurses. You need to bag all stuffed animals, vacuum and empty the bag/container, remove bedding and wash in hot water. Going to friend’s houses or staying the night at their homes where lice is present may place your student at risk to bring home the lice. Lice do not jump from head to head but pass from sharing items such as clothing, combs or bedding. It can pass from direct head to head contact as well. White nits are present after the egg has hatched. A nit that has not hatched is sometimes brown in color and can be very difficult to see. Check your student’s head in the sunlight! This is the best way to do so and check near the scalp. If there is debri in their hair that doesn’t look right and is attached tightly to the hair shaft then you may want to check further to the surrounding hair follicles. Again, even if 1-2 nits are present and you think you have treated your child's head fully, you still can have an outbreak in a few days. The fact is that lice is a pain. It may not be a safety issue but it can be a financial issue for families and a very big stressor to most families! Our hands are tied on what we can do at the schools-per ODE’s regulations. We are doing our very best to stop the spread of this!
Thank you for your help with this, Your Cascade School District Nursing Team cascadeschoolnurse@cascade.k12.or.us
