K-12th GRADE INFORMATION
Note from our Director: Response to Question - Why do we have a dress code?
Thank you for your question about the dress code policy. I appreciate the opportunity to explain the reasons behind our dress code and how it benefits our school community.
The dress code was established by the first school board for several important reasons:
Sense of Belonging: Just like a sports team wears uniforms, our dress code helps everyone feel like they belong. It creates a sense of unity and pride, making it clear who is part of our school community. This contributes to a safer environment because we can easily identify who should be on campus.
Breaking Down Barriers: The dress code helps break down social and economic barriers. Research shows that when students dress similarly, it reduces the emphasis on differences in culture and social status. This encourages students to make friends with a diverse group of peers, fostering a more inclusive and supportive environment.
Minimizing Distractions: By having a dress code, we can minimize distractions in the classroom. When students wear modest and appropriate clothing, it creates a better learning environment where everyone can focus on their studies.
Our original dress code, requiring students to wear specific colors and types of clothing. For example, students had to wear red, white, black, or blue collared shirts with tan or black pants (no denim). Shoes needed to be leather, and shirts had to be tucked in with a belt. Boys had to keep their hair short and off the collar, with no earrings allowed. Girls could wear one small pair of earrings, and everyone’s hair had to be its natural color. This strict dress code helped prevent students from wearing clothing that promoted negative gang or gothic trends, such as very baggy pants that hang below the waist, all black, and outlandish hairstyles.
Today's dress code allows for more flexibility. Students can wear more colors, participate in spirit dress days each week, and even wear denim. However, our commitment to prevent gang related dress is still high. We can't allow casual dress or worse gang styles to come into our school environment and become a distraction to learning. As a school, we want our students to have something special that makes our school unique. When the dress code is followed, it contributes to a positive and distinctive school culture that fosters acceptance and safety of all students, from all cultures, and all backgrounds.
By adhering to the dress code, we can maintain a safe, inclusive, and focused learning environment where all students can thrive. Thank you for understanding and supporting ALA's dress code.
