Leading and Learning: NORMALIZE EMOTIONS
One of the great aspects of the show Ted Lasso is watching the characters come around to deal with their emotions and past life problems. For numerous characters, once they can acknowledge their emotions and the implications of those emotions on their lives, they can finally move forward and feel a new freedom.
This reminds me of a quote from Brene Brown: "Vulnerability sounds like truth and feels like courage. Truth and courage aren't always comfortable, but they're never weakness."
As we move through this school year, we need to acknowledge the past, the stress, and the emotional toll of the past few years. It happened, and it did impact us -- all of us.
How we deal with this strain is what matters going forward. I shared this image on opening day:
No one in this building expects you to be perfect. So, we need to stop placing this expectation on ourselves. We expect people to show up and give what they can to support our school, our culture, and our students. Your best is your best on any given day.
The only thing worse than being sad is being sad and alone. You are not alone, we are in this together, and we will be successful as a united front.
Be a Cardinal; Change Lives; Put a Mission into Motion

Grateful Friday Challenge 🎉
Are you ready for some Football? It’s time! Tonight is a big night in the school year -- tonight is the kick-off of our own version of Friday Night Lights. Since we start school so early, it seems like today has taken a long time to get here. In the epically famous TV show (Friday Night Lights), good old Coach Taylor had some great advice for his players from week to week; you might remember or have heard of some of his most popular thoughts.
Most of us have had a coach or a teacher who has brought out the best in us, who has pushed us in ways that helped us to better ourselves and made us want to be a coach or mentor for someone else too.
We have so many students who are walking the halls, sitting in our classes today, and participating in representing our school and our community- and their seasons have recently kicked off this past week or so- or as in football and cheerleading, starting tonight.
Our kids (and coaches) work hard in practice to put forth the best version of themselves at game time. Do you know who these kids are? Their sport? Position? Number? What instrument do they play in the marching band?
Today’s #SHSGFC is to try and find a minute here or there to ask about and recognize those students who represent us all outside the classroom. Take a moment to ask about their seasons so far, if you need ideas of what you are looking for; we have: Volleyball, Girls Golf, Boys Tennis, Boys and Girls Cross Country, Cheerleading, Football, Boys and Girls Soccer… and of course, we should also include, the Booster Club, Cardinal Dance Team, the CyberCards Robotics Team, and Marching Band all working hard this season! Let’s ensure they know that we support and are proud of them.
It would also be great if you have time to track down some of your colleagues who are leading these students as coaches, directors, or mentors to wish them luck, ask how things are going, and just give some support!
Good luck to all the Cardinal players and coaches taking to the fields and courts this weekend and in the upcoming week!
With banners flying as we go…
