• Salutatorian*: The student or students who have the second highest GPA overall during their years at NBMS earn Salutatorian status. This award is given to 8th Graders during the promotion ceremony.

Silence is not an acceptable response to bullying. Ignoring it won’t work. Everyone needs to be empowered with options for responding to bullying situations.

What is cyberbullying?

Cyberbullying is bullying with the use of digital technologies. It can take place on social media, messaging platforms, gaming platforms, and cell phones. It is repeated behavior, aimed at scaring, angering, or shaming those who are targeted. Examples include:

• spreading lies about or posting embarrassing photos or videos of someone on social media
• sending hurtful, abusive, or threatening messages, images, or videos via messaging platforms
• impersonating someone and sending mean messages to others on their behalf or through fake accounts.

Face-to-face bullying and cyberbullying can often happen alongside each other. But cyberbullying leaves a digital footprint – a record that can prove useful and provide evidence to help stop the abuse (source: Unicef)

Take the Anti-bullying pledge by agreeing to:

• Treat others respectfully.
• Try to include those who are left out.
• Refuse to bully others.
• Refuse to watch, laugh or join in when someone is being bullied.
• Refuse to take out your cell phone and record interactions where someone is being bullied.
• Refuse to send hurtful or threatening messages, create fake accounts and send mean messages, spread lies or post embarrassing photos or videos of others on Snapchat, Instagram, and other social media platforms.
• Tell an adult.
• Help those who are being bullied.

Students are expected to follow these universal classroom expectations:

• Students should be quietly seated by the second bell.

• Students should not talk and must park their Chromebook during teacher instruction.

• Students should not get out of their seats without raising their hand and asking for teacher's permission.

• Students should be prepared to learn and have a charged Chromebook, charger, pencil, paper, and AR book.

• Students should read when finished early in all classes and in FLEX classes.

• Students should S.L.A.N.T (sit-up, listen, ask and answer questions, nod your head, and track the speaker) during teacher-led instruction and whole-group discussions.

• Students should not be listening to music on personal devices or Chromebook.

• Students should work on school assignments, iReady Math Pathway, or read for AR while in Flex class and maintain a maximum noise Level 1.

• Students should wait until the teacher dismisses the class. The bell does not dismiss students. Students will be dismissed in an orderly fashion by the teacher.

Students- there is absolutely no gum chewing allowed on campus.

Students are not permitted to wear air pods, headphones, or ear buds during passing periods and during class time.

STOPit is an online reporting tool designed to deter and mitigate bullying, cyber abuse, and other inappropriate behaviors. STOPit is an anonymous, comfortable way for students to share information so that they can either provide or get help as quickly and as efficiently as possible.

How Does STOPit Work?

1. Submit a tip via the website (bookmarked on all school devices), 24/7 phone hotline, or mobile app.
2. Incident Response Center monitors and reviews your submission.
3. School Administrators receive and act on tip submission.

What Can Students Report?

• Bullying
• Cyberbullying
• Harassment
• Violence, threats, or weapons possession
• Alcohol or drug-related issues
• Discrimination

Students have the power to help put an end to harmful and inappropriate behavior they see online through social media and other means. They can use STOPit to reach out for help if they or a peer are facing a personal crisis or experiencing bullying, abuse, or are otherwise in need of assistance. Our goal with STOPit is to create a safer, kinder, school community both online and off.

Students can now ride METRO for free. Buses serve 24 routes that provide convenient transportation throughout Santa Cruz County. Students can take the bus to school, to work, to the beach, and to meet up with friends.

Need to make a connection that’s farther than walking allows? Bring your bike. All METRO buses are equipped with bike racks to accommodate up to 3 bicycles.

It’s the eco-friendly way to get around.

METRO is dedicated to protecting the environment and has pledged to transition to a zero-emissions fleet. Currently, METRO is partnering with local environmental partners to give back to help protect Santa Cruz’s beautiful natural resources.

Youth Cruz Free eliminates fares to increase access and encourage ridership for youth in grades K-12.

Riders in 8 th Grade and under may be asked by the driver to identify their grade level or the school they attend. Students may be asked to provide a Student ID if one is available. No registration necessary with a Student ID.

iders in Grades 9 – 12 will be asked to show ID to the driver. No registration necessary with a Student ID. Riders without a Student ID can validate grade level by getting a special pass from their school or signing up for a free METRO Youth Cruz Free ID.

Get a free METRO Youth Cruz Free ID if you don’t have a student ID: To obtain a METRO Youth Cruz Free ID, please visit one of METRO’s Customer Service windows at either the Watsonville Transit Center or Pacific Station in Downtown Santa Cruz, during business hours, bring a form of ID or proof of grade level, and fill out a Youth Cruz Free On-Demand Form. Please allow at least 5-10 minutes for processing.

According to California law, anyone under the age of 18 must wear a bicycle helmet if using the following modes of transportation: bicycle, e-bicycle, non-motorized scooter, skateboard, inline/roller skates or as a passenger. Wearing a properly fitted bicycle helmet can dramatically reduce your risk of serious injury from a crash or fall!

NBMS Students are required to wear a helmet to and from school when riding a bike, e-bike, scooter, or skateboard. If a student does not have a helmet, the bike/ebike/scooter/skateboard will be confiscated by NBMS staff and remain in the office for parent pick-up.

Students:

• Follow the rules of the road (California Vehicle Code).
• Wear properly-fitted bicycle helmets at all times
• Ride your bike on the right side of the street in the SAME direction as traffic
• Riders and passengers should only ride on a permanent seat of a bicycle, never on the pegs or handle bars
• Learn and use proper hand signals when riding.
• Avoid using cell phones or other distracting devices when riding your bicycle.
• Parents: plan and practice the safest route to school with your child before allowing them to ride

Four common California Vehicle Code bicycle violations:

21212 CVC- Helmet Requirements

(a) A person under 18 years of age shall not operate a bicycle, a non-motorized scooter,

or a skateboard, nor shall they wear in-line or roller skates, nor ride upon a bicycle,

a non-motorized scooter, or a skateboard as a passenger, upon a street, bikeway...or any bicycle path or trail unless that person is wearing a properly fitted and fastened bicycle helmet.

22450 CVC – Stop Sign

(a) The driver of any vehicle approaching a stop sign at the entrance to, or within,

an intersection shall stop at a limit line, if marked, otherwise before entering the

crosswalk on the near side of the intersection. If there is no limit line or crosswalk,

the driver shall stop at the entrance to the intersecting roadway.

22350 CVC Unsafe Speed

(a) No person shall drive a vehicle upon a highway at a speed greater than is

reasonable or prudent having due regard for weather, visibility, the traffic on, and

the surface and width of, the highway, and in no event at a speed which endangers

the safety of persons or property.

24016(b)(4) CVC Motorized Bicycle:

In summary, Type “B” e-bikes must be operated by a person at least 16 years old

and shall obey bicycle laws.

8th-Grade Expectations

Each year the 8th Grade class has the privilege of participating in special end-of-the-year activities, including the promotion ceremony. In order to participate in the 8th Grade activities, each student must uphold the general classroom and school-wide behavioral expectations.

A student may be excluded from end-of-the-year activities, including promotion if any of the following occur:

• The student has excessive behavior infractions including detentions, and/or Friday schools or has been suspended from school.

• The student has excessive absences and tardies.

• The student has any outstanding school fees or fines.

• The student has an ‘F’ as reported on the final report card and/or does not have a passing GPA (no F’s).

Counselors from the high schools will be here at New Brighton on Friday, March 3rd to present to the students during their PE period. At this meeting, your student should receive printed information about registration and course selection. The counselors will then return to New Brighton on Wednesday, March 8th and Thursday, March 9th during PE to meet with your student about their schedules for next year and answer questions. You are welcome to attend this brief meeting with your student.

Please be sure to review the information that your child brings home from the March 3rd presentations. There will be a lot of important information included for parents to review.

Soquel, Harbor, and Santa Cruz High are in a different school district- the Santa Cruz City Schools district- and you will need to register your child for high school. This can be done in person at the high schools or online through Infinite Campus. Please note that you will need a NEW Infinite Campus login, different from the one here with Soquel Elem School District. Your current Infinite Campus account WILL NOT transfer to Santa Cruz City school district.
