Students enter the National Merit Program by taking the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT) and meeting other program requirements. In the spring following the fall administration NMSC identifies about 50,000 program participants with the highest scores most of these students are named as either Semifinalists or Commended Students.
More than 16,000 of the high scorers, representing 1 percent of the nation's high school graduating seniors qualify as Semifinalists and these students have an opportunity to advance further in the NMSQT Program.
Thank you all for the many ways you have contributed to these students' experience and good luck to our Semifinalists!
National Merit Commended Students
Herricks continues its tradition of excellence with 29 students recently named Commended Students in the 2023-2024 National Merit Scholarship Program. To qualify for recognition as a commended scholar students have typically scored in the top 25-3% of all students on the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test taken in October of their junior year. With 23 Commended Scholars and 9 National Merit Semi-finalists, just over 10% of our Senior Class have earned recognition in this prestigious National Merit Scholarship Program.

HHS Remembers September 11th
On September 11th, several English classes participated in a digital commemoration of 9/11. The 9/11 Memorial & Museum encourages people from around the county to take a photo of the sky and post it on social media platforms to digitally commemorate the anniversary of 9/11. Remember the Sky is a digital commemoration that is inspired by the blue sky that was present on the morning of 9/11. This digital commemoration is also inspired by Spencer Finch's art installation in the 9/11 Memorial Museum. Finch's exhibit consists of 2,983 shades of blue which serves as a tribute to the enormity of collective loss and the individuality of those who lost their lives. Herricks students, as part of their English classes led by Mrs. Stephens, Mrs. Volk, Mrs. Dainoff, and Mrs. Daly, discussed ways in which we memorialize events and then took pictures to participate in this worldwide digital commemoration.
Senior Car Wash
On September 9, the Class of 2024 grade level representatives, along with members of our Herricks executive board, hosted our second car wash to fundraise for senior prom! The community truly showed their support for the Class of 2024 by coming out to get their cars cleaned, and we successfully raised money contributing to our upcoming senior prom, which will be hosted at Oheka Castle in June!
