NATIVE AMERICAN HERITAGE MONTH
November is Native American Heritage Month, or as it is commonly referred to, American Indian and Alaska Native Heritage Month.
The month is a time to celebrate rich and diverse cultures, traditions, and histories and to acknowledge the important contributions of Native people. Heritage Month is also an opportune time to educate the general public about tribes, to raise a general awareness about the unique challenges Native people have faced both historically and in the present, and the ways in which tribal citizens have worked to conquer these challenges.
VETERANS DAY
ON THE 11TH HOUR OF THE 11TH DAY of the 11th month of 1918, an armistice, or temporary cessation of hostilities, was declared between the Allied nations and Germany in the First World War, then known as “the Great War.”
Commemorated as Armistice Day beginning the following year, November 11th became a legal federal holiday in the United States in 1938. In the aftermath of World War II and the Korean War, Armistice Day became Veterans Day, a holiday dedicated to American veterans of all wars.
TAKE A HIKE DAY
National Take a Hike Day, also referred to as National Hiking Day, is celebrated annually on November 17. This observance was created to encourage people to head outside and make the most of the mental and physical benefits of hiking.
The history of hiking in the United States dates back to the early 19th century. In 1819, Abel Crawford and his son Ethan cleared a trail to the summit of Mount Washington to attract tourists. The Crawford Path exists to this day and is considered the oldest continuously maintained hiking trail in the United States.
THANKSGIVING
For more than two centuries, days of thanksgiving were celebrated by individual colonies and states. It was not until 1863, in the midst of the Civil War, that President Abraham Lincoln proclaimed a national Thanksgiving Day to be held each November.
This holiday is not without controversy but to many Americans it now centers on cooking and sharing a bountiful meal with family and friends. Turkey, a Thanksgiving staple so ubiquitous it has become all but synonymous with the holiday.
Childhood Cancer Awareness Month is in September.....
But awareness is not limited to one month. Each year, thousands of children face the battle against cancer with inspiring hope and incredible bravery. When a child is diagnosed with cancer, an entire family and community are affected. The devotion of parents, grandparents, loved ones, and friends creates a treasured network of support for these courageous children. This November, let's honor the young lives taken too soon and the survivors who face chronic health challenges, we celebrate the progress made in treatment and recovery and those dedicated to fighting this disease so all children may have the chance to live a full and healthy life.
The following organizations are dedicated to fighting this disease. Click the links below if you'd like to volunteer:
