AUSD CONNECTION
NEWS FROM ALHAMBRA UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT

Message from the Superintendent
Dear AUSD Community,
As we move further into the school year, I want to take a moment to recognize all that our students and staff have already accomplished. Across our district, we have seen outstanding achievements, with students excelling in and out of the classroom and earning recognition in local and statewide competitions, including the impressive accomplishments at the recent Los Angeles County Academic Decathlon. (See our first “featured” event below for more details.) These successes are a testament to the hard work and dedication of our students, teachers, and families.
However, none of these achievements would be possible without regular and consistent school attendance. While we absolutely want students to stay home when they are truly ill, missing school for other reasons can add up quickly. Missing just one or two days each month can total nearly a full year of lost instruction by the time a student completes 12th grade. Research shows that chronic absenteeism (missing 10% or more school days) is linked to lower academic performance, difficulty keeping up with coursework, and a higher risk of not graduating on time.
We recognize that the recent wildfires led to multiple days of school closures across our entire district in January and that Mark Keppel High School faced additional closures due to a power outage earlier this month. Closing our schools is a decision we do not take lightly, but in these cases, the closures were necessary due to the unforeseen circumstances. These unexpected disruptions make it even more critical for students to be in school every day. Every lesson missed is an opportunity lost, and we want to ensure that all students have the best chance to reach their full potential.
Thank you for your partnership in making attendance a priority. If your family is facing challenges related to attendance, please reach out to your school’s office. We are here to support you as we continue to work together to make this school year a great one!
Warm Regards,
Denise R. Jaramillo, Ed.D.
Superintendent

She was joined by committee members Keiko Rakin (AHS student), Briana Hampton (SGHS student), Angel Obike (SGHS student), and Ronnell Davis (SGHS parent & coach). 📢 SMS FEATURE: Mass Communication System SMS/Text Messages
The recent windstorm/fire events and school closures spotlighted the importance of the addition of our SMS/Text messaging system in helping us keep families and staff members informed. We added the SMS/Text feature to our mass communication system (Blackboard) in August 2024. This enhancement has significantly improved our communication capabilities, ensuring timely and efficient updates for our staff and families, especially during emergencies. We have appreciated your patience as we transitioned to this new notification tool and hope to see even more families sign up. Click HERE to see our SMS Community Frequently Asked Questions.

Facilities Updates
Our custodial team removed several layers of wax by scraping off the excess and stripping it down to the bare floors at Fremont ES. The floors were then cleaned and prepared for applying four layers of wax. After days of relentless efforts, the cafeteria floors look spotless.
Facilities services prepped the sites for the forecasted rainstorm over the last week. Stormwater drains were cleared, debris was removed from the roof to avoid gutter blockage, trash cans, and waste baskets were placed in case of water penetrations, and leaves, tree debris, and trash were cleared around the floor drains to prevent water pooling and ponding.
On the 20th of February, Fremont School held their Family Literacy Night. This was a fun-filled evening with multicultural stories and featured Antonio Sacre as keynote speaker. Antonio is a bilingual Cuban and Irish-American writer, where his writing focuses on multicultural family dynamics. The evening featured multiple breakout sessions for families to attend. The students also had the opportunity to buy books from La Libreria with a book signing from Antonio Sacre.
During kindness week, Garfield Wildcats showed their gratitude for our local Fire Station # 71 fire fighters. The Garfield School students wanted to show their appreciate for all the kindness our firefighters showed during the wildfires and every day. Thank you, station 71!
Baldwin School’s Nutrition Advisory Council had a special treat as award-winning Chef Bill Yee visited for three hands-on sessions, thanks to Farm to School. The students explored exciting culinary careers while preparing hotel-style dishes using fresh, locally sourced ingredients, during three fun-filled and informative sessions. In the three sessions, the students made and sampled a five-star omelet, practiced knife skills and made French toast, and Chef Yee and Chef Minnie demonstrated Albondigas Meatball Soup. Thank you, Chef Bill!
Seven Brightwood educators (Michael Hillman, June Dojillo, Naomi Cruz, Melody Hou, Christine Cebrian and Kimberly Ng) attended the "UDLeading the Way" Summit (January 29-31) in Stockton, California, thanks to funding from LACOE and the CCIL grant. Principal Candace Griego served as a panelist during LACOE PD partners Audra Mesa’s and Anya Bergman's presentation. Audrey and Anya presented on UDL-based coaching, while Principal Griego shared about Brightwood's implementation. The end of the conference brought a bit of excitement as every teacher on the Brightwood team ended up winning flexible seating furniture in the closing raffle.
On Friday, February 21st, Monterey Highlands held its 2nd Annual Career Day. The PTA recruited various professionals from the greater school community in a wide variety of disciplines, from law to engineering to marketing to dance to the culinary arts. Guest speaker, Vincy Chan, now a Senior Lead Engineer at Booz Allen Hamilton, is a Northrup School and Alhambra High School graduate, and was oMr. B's former AP Calculus BC student! The honored guests were treated to a reception and were given a small token of appreciation from PTA for planting seeds of inspiration in the Husky Nation students.
Despite losing two days of rehearsal time due to the power outages at Mark Keppel High School, their choir program gave an outstanding concert on February 7th! It was standing-room only for "LOVE NOTES: Celebrating LOVE," as the audience enjoyed solos, duets, and small group ensembles. Choir director Mr. Marcelo Martinez said that the concert was student-driven and community-supported.
Congratulations to Dr. Rosa Soria, principal at Granada School, and this month's AUSD Excellence in Leadership award recipient. During the last general principals meeting, Mr. Abel Boubois, last month's recipient, bestowed the recognition on Dr. Soria, emphasizing her support and guidance as both a colleague and a supervisor (when he was her AP at Monterey Highlands School). In addition to all she does for Granada School, Dr. Soria also serves as the current president of the Alhambra Management Association.
