HJH looks to finish the 3rd 9 weeks strong...
We are very proud of the work our students have done thus far in the school year as we approach the conclusion of our 3rd 9 weeks. We are truly honored and blessed to work on a campus with such amazing and talented students. As we continue to move into our spring semester, we will maintain our focus on continual growth, not only as a campus, but for each individual student that walks through our doors. HJH will continue to be a campus that empowers students to take advantage of the academic opportunity that prepares them for success. Our teachers continue to challenge students in our classrooms to ensure our students are prepared for the rigors they will face during their educational journey. Additionally, we are very proud of the work our students do outside the classroom in their extracurricular activities. Listed below are some of the highlights and events we have on campus in the month of March. Thank you for all your continued support. HJH is a great campus because of the people we serve. Go Cats!

HJH UIL Math/Science
The Bobcat Math & Science Team (MST) is continuing to show just how much they want to be successful. The month of February ended with the greatest amount of growth they have seen all season. As of now, there are 31 students that have qualified to attend the state competition at the end of March. But with two more “regular season” meets remaining, there is bound to be many more students that are added to that list! When you see a member of the Bobcat MST, give them a high five or a fist bump and wish them well. This group of Mathletes are roaring and ready to go!
The MST Coaches greatly appreciate all of the students' hard work and dedication as well as the endless support and backing of their parents.
HJH STUCO
Students are gearing up for elections to choose their organization leaders. Candidates are writing essays to share their visions, enhancing leadership skills and teamwork. Participation in running or voting is vital, as every voice shapes the student council's future. The election aims to be fair and enthusiastic, with hopes for successful candidates to achieve new goals.
Our pretzel fundraising event raised significant funds and fostered a sense of community and camaraderie among students. Our fundraiser provides additional resources for upcoming student council projects and activities. As we move forward, let's continue to support and engage in activities that bring our school community closer together, enhancing our shared experiences and paving the way for future successes.
StuCo officers gave the teachers a treat of drinks delivered to their classrooms during advisory. It was a small gesture, but it went a long way in showing appreciation for the hard work and dedication teachers put in every day. The teachers were delighted, their smiles and gratitude evident as they enjoyed their refreshments.
HJH STUCO
StuCo honors Jotham Rite for his volunteer work at the Baseball Tournament. His dedication significantly impacted the event's success, showcasing an exemplary commitment to the community. Jotham's willingness to support his peers is inspiring and reflects the spirit valued in the student body. Keep it up, Jotham!

Leader in Me
Attendance Matters!
The school day starts at 7:50am and ends at 3:35pm. At 7:45am, students will be released from the gym to their classrooms, and morning announcements will start at 7:50am. Attendance is taken every period at the Jr. High. Any student arriving late or leaving early will be marked absent for the periods that he/she misses. All absences, full or partial day, require documentation to be excused. If a student misses more than 20 minutes of a class without valid documentation, the student will be considered absent for this purpose.
When a student is absent and returns to school, he/she MUST bring a note signed by the parent explaining the reason for the absence or a note from a doctor. Any absence of more than 5 consecutive days for illness will require a statement from a doctor verifying the illness. Parent notes must be turned in within 3 days of the absence.
*Any documentation needing to be turned in can be done so through the reception desk, attendance office, or emailed directly to Mrs. Dorsey at bdorsey@hisd.com.
Parent Notes
Parent notes must be turned in within 3 days of the absence. Per our handbook, early pick-ups are unexcused unless our nurse sends your student home or we receive documentation from a doctor's office for that date. Any documentation needing to be turned in can be done so through the reception desk or attendance office, or emailed directly to Mrs. Dorsey at bdorsey@hisd.com.
Saturday School/Credit Recovery
Texas Education Agency states that a student must attend a class 90% of the time it is offered to earn credit for that class. Students with less than 90% attendance will not earn credit and cannot be promoted to the next grade level. Both excused and unexcused absences count toward time missed in a class. The state will allow us to place a student in the next grade level if that student has completed a principal approved plan to recover attendance. You will be notified if your student falls below 90% attendance and requires credit recovery. Credit recovery classes began Saturday, February 22nd and will continue into March.
Tutorials
If your child is needs extra support in a classroom we have opportunities for them to receive assistance outside the school day. Teachers are available before and after school for tutorials. Even if the day you can bring your child early or pick them up late doesn't match with their teacher's tutorial schedule, someone in that department can help. Please contact your teacher if you feel your child needs the extra support to be successful this school year.
HJH College Day
Every 2nd Thursday of the month, students and staff are encouraged to wear college shirts to endorse education beyond high school. This month will be Thursday, March 13th. On this day, we can come together regardless of our college mascot and cheer on our students as they begin to prepare for their future.
School Safety Drills
In an effort to practice our safety protocols, HJH will regularly perform safety drills to ensure our students and staff know how to respond in a crisis situation. Safety is our number one priority and we will continue to practice all state mandated drills throughout the school year so that our students and staff are prepared. In the event of an actual emergency, HJH will communicate to our families in a timely manner to keep you informed.
8th Grade Dance

On Monday, March 24th, a registration and liability form will be sent to all 8th-grade parents. The deadline to RSVP is Friday, April 4th.

Spring Break Activities with Teens
Nurse Monthly Newsletter–March 2025
Welcome Spring!
Going into warmer weather means time outdoors that we have greatly missed. If your student has a severe allergy to insect stings, please ensure that they have their epi-pen on them and that the medical documentation in the nurse office is up to date.
Along with allergies comes flare ups of asthma and other respiratory conditions. Students are allowed to self-carry rescue inhalers with the proper documentation and school permission. Please take a moment to check their backpacks to ensure that the inhaler is there, not expired, is clean, and is functioning properly. Any time your student has an off-campus event during school hours and you have a medical need or concern, please reach out to me so that we can make a plan ahead of time.
Reminder: Injured student athletes with athletic restrictions on their doctor’s notes are responsible for getting those notes to the nurse or coach prior to their athletic period. Those notes can also be emailed or faxed to me and I will share them with the appropriate coaches.
Please note the HISD medication administration policy: any and all medications must have doctor's written orders to be given at school. This includes over the counter medications, such as Tylenol. The district does not provide these medications. Medication Administration forms can be found online at https://www.hisd.com/Domain/50
Students are not allowed to carry any medications without written permission from the school nurse and the prescribing physician per HISD policy. However, if medication is needed and a doctor’s order cannot be obtained, the parent can give their student a single dose of medication at the front reception, any time during the school day.
Always reach out with any questions or concerns.

Restroom Policy
Tardy Policy
Instructional time is essential to student success. Additionally, it is critical that students learn the importance of punctuality. In order to encourage this behavior, HJH has implemented the following campus policy regarding tardies:
Tardies will be tracked cumulatively each 9 week grading period, with the following consequences in place for repeated tardies:
5th tardy - 1 day of Lunch Detention
10th tardy - 1 day of After School Detention
15th tardy - 1 day of ISS
20+ - Discretion of Campus Administration
Please discuss with your child the importance of punctuality as we are preparing students to be responsible with their time.
Bullying/Harassment
Bullying:
is unwanted, aggressive behavior among school aged children that involves a real or perceived power imbalance. The behavior is repeated, or has the potential to be repeated, over time. Both kids who are bullied and who bully others may have serious, lasting problems. Bullying can threaten students’ physical and emotional safety at school and can negatively impact their ability to learn.
In order to be considered bullying, the behavior must be aggressive and include:
An Imbalance of Power: Kids who bully use their power—such as physical strength, access to embarrassing information, or popularity—to control or harm others. Power imbalances can change over time and in different situations, even if they involve the same people.
Repetition: Bullying behaviors happen more than once or have the potential to happen more than once.
Bullying could include actions such as making threats, spreading rumors, attacking someone physically or verbally, and excluding someone from a group on purpose.
Harassment:
means threatening to cause harm or bodily injury to another student, engaging in sexually intimidating conduct, causing physical damage to the property of another student, subjecting another student to physical confinement or restraint, or maliciously taking any action that substantially harms another student's physical or emotional health or safety.

House Bill 114 (HB 114)
Parents and Guardians,
We are reaching out to bring your attention to an important new policy change that has been passed by the 88th Texas Legislature and will be taking effect immediately in our district.
House Bill 114 (HB 114) has been enacted to respond to the increasing concerns around e-cigarettes, vaping, marijuana, and THC related products amongst our youth. The Bill mandates that any student found in possession of, under the influence of, selling, gifting, or delivering these substances within a 300-feet radius of any school premises, will be immediately removed and placed in a Disciplinary Alternative Education Program (DAEP).
You can access the full version of the Bill here: https://capitol.texas.gov/tlodocs/88R/billtext/pdf/HB00114F.pdf
Please take a moment to discuss the implications of this new law with your children, emphasizing the importance of adhering to school policies and laws for their own welfare and for the betterment of the school community as a whole.
Thank you,
HISD Administration
