Nutrient Management
A few reminders:
- Farmers may resume spreading on March 1, 2024, based on their nutrient management plan recommendations, as long as fields are not saturated, snow-covered, or hard-frozen. https://news.maryland.gov/mda/press-release/2023/12/06/winter-ban-on-spreading-manure-begins-december-16-2/
- The Annual Implementation Report (AIR) was due on March 1st . If you have not sent it in, do so immediately to avoid any fine from the Maryland Department of Agriculture.
- If you have not requested a plan be written for 2024, please call 301-724-3320 to do so as soon as possible, as we are entering the busy season.
- Soil Samples - Please be sure to include the email of your Nutrient Management Advisor on your sample form, so they will receive the results. See the Soil Test Labs Comparison Guide link below.

Healthy Soil For Your Farm -Workshop - Garrett College
Are you interested in better understanding your soil and how to have a healthy soil? University of Maryland and Maryland Department of Agriculture are offering a workshop on Healthy Soils for Your Farm.
The workshop will be held on March 19th at Garrett College in McHenry in Rm 111 of the Garrett Information Enterprise Center from 9:30 am to 2:30 pm. The program will include soil evaluation using the Maryland Soil Health Card, other tests and measures of soil health, cover crops, planting no till vegetable crops and funding for soil health practices.
Please register by March 15th by calling Garrett College at 301-387-3069. Lunch will be provided and there is no cost for the meeting.
Ujamaa Cooperative Farming Alliance (UCFA), a Maryland-based collective of BIPOC growers, will be hosting two live online classes for farmers and gardeners this coming month. Each “Seed Farming 101” webinar, taught by an experienced instructor, will cover techniques for the traditional art of seed saving. Attendees can choose between their March 9 and March 30 sessions, with a second June class to follow each of these sessions. Learn more and register here.
Hiring & Retaining Farm Employees - FREE Webinars
The University of Maryland and the University of Delaware will host the Hiring and Retaining Farm Employees – What you Need to Know and Do four webinars every Friday in April at noon starting on April 5th and ending on April 26. The free webinars will cover developing an employee handbook for your operation, basic legal requirements, and how to incorporate benefits that agricultural employers deal with. The funding for this program is thanks to the Northeast Risk Management Education Center.

Farmers Market Nutrition Program (FMNP) Training
The Maryland Department of Agriculture is hosting Farmers Market Nutrition Program trainings throughout the State for farmers, market managers, and extension agents to receive training in the Program. This training is required for farmers participating in the FMNP and meets the requirements of USDA. It is valid for 3 years.

The USDA today announced it is accepting applications for the Local Agriculture Market Program (LAMP). $24.7M is available in grant funds to expand and strengthen local regional food systems and increase the availability of locally grown agricultural products.
