BCS Updates - April 12, 2024
MDE's Region 7 Teacher of the Year
Buchanan Community Schools proudly announces that Melissa Frost, esteemed educator and dedicated science teacher of Buchanan High School, has been honored as the Michigan Department of Education’s Region 7 Teacher of the Year for the academic year 2024-2025.
The Teacher of the Year program, organized by the Michigan Department of Education, aims to recognize and celebrate outstanding educators who demonstrate exemplary dedication to their profession and make significant contributions to the field of education. Melissa Frost exemplifies these qualities through her unwavering commitment to her students and innovative approaches to teaching.
In December 2023, Melissa had the privilege of presenting at the prestigious American Geophysical Union conference in San Francisco, California. There, she shared valuable insights gained from her participation in the Research Experience for Teachers Program at the Kellogg Biological Station Long-Term Ecological Research Program at Michigan State University. Melissa’s contributions to scientific research and education have not only enhanced her own teaching practice but have also enriched the learning experiences of her students.
Beyond the classroom, Melissa is actively involved in the Buchanan Community Schools Farm Committee, where she plays a vital role in helping to provide outdoor education opportunities for over 600 elementary students annually. Through hands-on activities and exploration of the school farm, students gain valuable insights into agriculture, environmental science, and sustainability, fostering a deeper connection with the natural world.
Additionally, Melissa has demonstrated leadership in environmental stewardship through her involvement in Buchanan High School’s Habitat Restoration project. Collaborating with student volunteers, she spearheaded the creation of a garden aimed at supporting local pollinators and promoting environmental conservation. This initiative not only benefits the local ecosystem but also serves as a valuable educational resource for students and staff alike.
Melissa Frost’s selection as the Michigan Department of Education’s Region 7 Teacher of the Year for 2024-2025 reflects her exemplary dedication to the teaching profession and her commitment to fostering student success. As Regional Teacher of the Year, Melissa will serve as a member of the Michigan Teacher Leadership Advisory Council, where she will advocate for teacher voices and contribute to the enhancement of Michigan’s public education system.
Buchanan Community Schools congratulates Melissa Frost on this well-deserved honor and looks forward to her continued contributions to the field of education. We commend Melissa for her unwavering commitment to her profession and are excited for her next steps in running for the 2024-25 Michigan Teacher of the Year!

In order to do that, we ask that you follow our Chain of Command process shown in the diagram. On the left side of the process chart, you will see the common areas of district programming, and then following to the right would be the next step(s) in the Chain of Command for that district program area. Please start by contacting the staff member listed in the second box of each program area. The contact information for our leadership staff members with responsibility for addressing concerns is listed at the top of the diagram. Other contact information for building staff is available on our website in the “Staff Directory” section of each building’s web page. It is expected that most issues should be able to be resolved at these initial steps in the Chain of Command.
