Hoboken Elementary eSTEM Teams Compete in NJIT’s Fifth Annual STEM Challenge
Students from Brandt, Connors, and Wallace Elementary Schools are competing in NJIT’s Fifth Annual Elementary STEM Challenge, where 3rd to 5th-grade students use engineering and design principles to solve real-world problems.
This year’s challenge, “Community Problem-Solving,” tasked students with creating solutions using microcontroller technology. With guidance from teachers Ms. Samuel (Brandt), Ms. Barsukova (Connors), and Ms. Versacci (Wallace), teams developed innovative projects:
Brandt’s “Error 404” – A flood detection system to alert agencies about rising water levels.
Connors’ “Wild-bit” – A fire detection device for residential and wildland fires.
Wallace’s “Harbor Wave Watchers” – A tsunami detection system that provides warnings and safety guidance.
Since January, the teams have worked with mentors, testing and refining their designs. After finalizing their prototypes, they collaborated with Hoboken High School’s Innovation Lab to 3D print their models.
We applaud all teams for their creativity, dedication, and the positive impact of their STEM projects.
On Thursday, March 20th, a group of 5th graders participated in an exciting eSTEM Competition at the NJIT. It was a day filled with presentations, activities, assessments, exploration, and knowledge gathering. During the presentations, students had two presentations that the judges were scoring. During the first presentation, students explained a theme that they chose to work on. Their theme was about the preparedness for the wildfires. Using the slides and the Tri Fold, students showed their research and an idea.
During the second presentation, students explained how their device works in preparation for the wildfire. Their design included a Micro:bit, wires, breadboard, adapter, a code, and a 3D Printing piece. In addition, to students observed NJIT students' presentations, visited a cool Makerspace, took an assessment, and learned from the other teams.
Kudos to our Koalas for amazing presentations and professionalism during the competition!!!

The NCAA Division 1 men's basketball tournament, known as "March Madness," is a single-elimination tournament to determine the national champion.
Despite most states restricting online sports and casino betting to those 21 and older, loopholes exist, allowing many teens to bypass age restrictions. Since the 2018 U.S. Supreme Court ruling, over half of states have legalized online gambling. Teen gambling is rising as more teens gain access to betting through cell phones and computers.
Interestingly, only one in four parents have discussed online betting with their teens, and more than half are unaware of their state's legal gambling age.
The Hoboken High School Teen Action Task Force distributed pamphlets about the risks of gambling. Students learned that early gambling can impact mental health, with young adult gamblers who started in adolescence more likely to experience substance use problems.
