From Principal Becker
Summer 2024!
Well, that's officially a wrap for the 2023-24 school year. Congratulations to our graduates and their families of the Class of 2024, and we bid you farewell! Our 28th commencement ceremony at 3M Arena at Mariucci was a great success and fitting send off. And to our soon-to-be sophomores, juniors, and seniors, we wish them a fantastic summer with your friends and families!
And as you all know, as were completing the final preparations for commencement and the conclusion of school – distributing of caps/gowns, collecting Chromebooks, locker cleanouts, final summatives – we learned that our school had been selected to host the memorial service to fallen Minneapolis Police Department (MPD) Officer Jamal Mitchell, whose family resides in Maple Grove. While we wish with every fiber of our being that such an event was never necessary, the fact that it was occurring Maple Grove Senior High was a tremendous honor.
During the last Wednesday of school, system leaders and I led a delegation of 40+ officers from MPD, LEMA (Law Enforcement Memorial Association), Maple Grove, St. Paul, Plymouth, Minnetonka and more, on a tour of our school to review the facilities. It was greatly moving to feel the solemn dedication of these men and women to honor Officer Mitchell and his family as they examined our gymnasiums, auditorium, cafeteria, and classrooms. Our Crimson students were incredibly respectful as they interacted with the delegation during passing time between classes.
Over the next five days, our custodians, grounds crew, and system staff members worked hours upon end to prepare our school building and campus for the service. There was fantastic partnership across the many agencies which worked to plan down to the smallest detail each moment of the day. The selflessness of every person was plainly evident, and by Tuesday morning our school was ready to welcome Officer Mitchell's family, thousands of law enforcement officials from across the state and region, and the general public. That we could be of service was a great honor. May the memory of Officer Jamal Mitchell be a blessing.
With that, we’ll sign off for a bit of time. The school will be open every working day from 7:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. I wish you and your families a wonderful summer!
Yours very respectfully,
Bart Becker, Principal
