Principal's Message
Welcome to June! What a month May was. We had great weather (including the rain!), and lots of things happening in our school. Our Gr. 7-12 Band students were able to visit Canmore, Banff and Jasper and perform for different groups. Thank you to Mr. Lewsaw for organizing the trip, and to Mrs. Mellissa Nordin, Mrs. Andrea Nickel and Mr. David Hodgetts for being chaperones on the trip. Our Gr. 6 students also got a chance to head to Ranch Camp last week!
A huge congratulations to our Grade 12 students as they celebrated their Grade 12 Farewell last Friday. It was great to see everyone all dressed up, and we are very proud of all of them as they finish off their year this month.
June is very busy with class trips and final exams. Please make sure to check your email regularly for upcoming events.
As we near the end of the year, we are in the early stages of planning for the 2024-2025 school year. Due to funding reductions at our school, there will be a teacher staff change for our school next year. Mme Lori Lunty has chosen to accept a position offered to her at Chester Ronning School in Camrose. Mme Lunty has been a part of Hay Lakes School for many years, and her contributions to our school will not be forgotten. We are going to miss her immensely, but we know that she will do great things at Chester Ronning.

Grade 12 Celebration
Congratulations to our Class of 2024 who celebrated last Friday. We wish you every success for your future!
Congratulations to Kate Anderson!
Starting last summer and throughout this school year Kate, one of our grade 11 students, participated in the Dual Credit Program through Olds College and completed the Veterinary Technical Assistant Program. Kate was required to complete five courses by distance, including attending labs on weekends, for which she earned 25 High School Credits and 25 College Credits. Kate showed great determination and perseverance while completing this program. Well done, Kate!
Farewell From Mrs. Lunty
Dear Hay Lakes School families,
I just wanted to say thank you and what a blessing it has been to be part of Hay Lakes School since 2006. I grew up in a rural school, so the opportunity to teach at one as well, working with students of all ages, watching them grow up and graduate has been very special to me. I treasure memories of Quebec trips, having fun with Christmas concerts and being able to spend time with many athletes who have been such great representatives of this school over the years, among many other great memories teaching and learning. Take care and I will miss you all. :)
With love,
Lori Lunty
Yearbooks are now on sale!
Some of our High School students have been working very hard this year on a yearbook, and we are happy to announce that they are now on sale! The cost per yearbook is $30, and can be purchased online on our website. The yearbooks should arrive in the fall, and for any students in Grade 12 who purchase them, they will either be sent home with younger siblings or mailed to students. Buy yours today!
School Council Meeting Tuesday
The final School Council Meeting of the year will be held Tuesday, June 4th at 7pm in the school Library. All are encouraged to attend.
A Visit From Fred Fox
On Tuesday, May 7, we were honored with a visit from Fred Fox, older brother of Terry Fox. Fred spoke to students and staff about Terry's journey and the continued work of the Terry Fox Foundation. He also left a signed copy of the book, Terry: Terry Fox and His Marathon of Hope, for our school library. It was a moving reminder of why we participate in the Terry Fox run every September.
Night of the Arts
A huge thank you to all students, parents and staff who contributed to and attended our Night of the Arts! The event was well-attended and it was fantastic to see student artwork and hear the school bands play. Well done everyone!
We Appreciate Our Supporters!
During our Night of the Arts, four of the major supporters of our school were recognized, including the Camrose and District Family Thrift Shop, BRCF, HLSYD, and HARRB.
HARRB is funded by the County of Camrose to support recreational activities in the Hay Lakes area. For many years they have generously given the school a grant towards the transportation cost of our band trips, including this year, for $2500.
Bobbi Way - Executive Director, BRCF
Battle River Community Foundation has given grants to our school's music program for many years to the tune of well over $10,000. The ukuleles played by the grade 5s were purchased with a grant from the BRCF in 2020, as were many of the band instruments in use this year.
Bethan Walter - HLSYD President
The Hay Lakes Society for Youth Development has purchased all kinds of materials and resources for our school, including many things for the music program. Last year they purchased 16 used instruments for our program at a cost of roughly $3500.
Pat Stachniak - Board Member, Camrose and District Family Thrift Shop
This year, the Camrose and District Family Thrift Shop has generously agreed to purchase a brand new tuba for us, worth almost $3300.
Grade 4 Music
The Grade 4 music class has been busy putting together a recorder recital of their “greatest hits” they have learned this semester. They will be performing for different classes over the next couple weeks to showcase their skills!
Félicitations et Bonne Chance!
Congratulations and good luck to Jasmine King in Grade 10 who is off to study at La Pocatiere, Quebec at the end of June for 5 weeks! Jasmine received a summer French Immersion bursary which will cover tuition, meals and lodging, workshops and cultural activities.
