LISD School Newsletter

A Note from Dr. Martin
Dear LISD Families,
Next week, we have conferences for both elementary and secondary students. If you haven't already signed up for conference slots in Parent Square, please do so. Conferences are a wonderful opportunity for you and your child to sit down with a teacher and talk about academic progress, social and emotional growth, goals, and habits. Please bring your child to the conference. There are always a few circumstances that would necessitate the need for a conversation without the student present, but in most cases, a student should be part of the conversation.
Elementary conferences are Monday-Thursday afternoons and Wednesday evening, with a noon dismissal all week. Secondary conferences are Wednesday evening and Thursday afternoon, with a noon dismissal Wednesday through Friday. Elementary students will eat lunch at the regular time each day. Secondary students will have a longer and more robust nutrition break mid-morning.
I hope all our students enjoy their balanced-calendar day off tomorrow. I'm looking forward to seeing you next week when you are here for conferences.
All my best,
Martha Martin

Fall Fun in First & Second Grade
First and Second Grade students had a fall adventure picking pumpkins and apples at the Post garden. Students are using the pumpkins in a measurement math unit and in a science life cycle unit. Happy Fall!
Staff Profile: "Bo" Walker
Bo Walker joined LISD this year as our special needs van driver and we are sure happy to have her! Bo recently wrapped up her tenure at the Food Share and was looking for another opportunity that kept her connected with our community. This is her second time around taking on a role with the school - the first time being five years ago when she worked with Kristen Maker in the woodshop class for a year. When asked what she likes about being at LISD she shared, "It's a different group of people that I wouldn't normally get to interact with. I really like everyone here - and I'm working on learning all the students' names."
Critical Need: Substitute Teachers!
Recess Volunteers Needed
Community folks - can you commit to one hour a week to help out at the school? We are seeking adult volunteers to monitor elementary recess at 10 am every day of the week. Ideally, we would love up to 5 adults to be able commit consistently to come each week on their chosen day. This would be a huge help for our elementary staff who are currently juggling this duty. Please email Brady Smith, Superintendent, bsmith@lopezislandschool.org, if this is something you can do.
