Frontier Schools' Outreach & Communications Department organizes several Outreach Talk Series with Community Leaders events each year. On Wednesday, October 19th, Councilman Eric Bunch (4th District) was our invited speaker. In attendance were 50 seniors from Frontier STEM High School, school staff, and community members. Councilman Bunch shared with the group that he's always had an interest in politics and that he enjoys talking and connecting with people to learn what their needs are. Councilman Bunch explained the role of City Council and the various issues they work on. He concluded by encouraging students to run for local government and then answered the many questions our seniors had for him.

Frontier's PreK program is growing. The school has sixty students now and plans to have more in the future. One big item of need has been a new PreK playground. We are thrilled to announce that two new philanthropic partners have stepped up to make that happen. The Ronald D. Deffenbaugh Foundation and the United Missouri Bank Foundations have partnered together to fund a brand new playground for our youngest students. Plans call for this new facility to be in place

by the spring of 2023. We thank and welcome the newest funding partners to Frontier Schools.

On October 17th, all campuses participated in districtwide professional development. Professional Development provides teachers and administrators an opportunity to foster new skills and techniques that they can apply in the classroom. The schedule that day consisted of PBIS Training, Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Training, and Ti Nspire Calculator Training.

On October 6th, Show Me KC Schools coordinated a tour for professionals from the education and social service space who work with families in the community.

FSI Elementary was one of their stops that day. During the tour, Frontier staff highlighted the school's ELL Program, the data, services, programs, and supports we have in place to support LatinX, Refugee and Newcomer Families, and volunteer opportunities for the community to support Frontier.

The Parent Academy is a FREE, district-wide initiative that strives to open the lines of communication between home and school by connecting parents to the resources and information needed to support their child's education.

Throughout the year, all campuses will host several Parent Academy events that will consist of educational and inspirational sessions covering a wide variety of topics; including, Conscious Discipline at Home, College Prep and Financial Aid, FAFSA, NWEA, etc.

• October 8th: How to Support Your Students' Learning from Home session at FSI Middle
• October 13th: FAFSA session at FSE
• October 7th: FAFSA session at FSHS

October 23-31 was Red Ribbon Week, a week-long awareness campaign that promotes a drug-free lifestyle and warns of the dangers of tobacco, alcohol and drug use. During Red Ribbon Week, lesson plans, resources, and activities were incorporated into the curriculum to support the purpose of this week. Students also had the opportunity to participate in fun theme days throughout the week.

On October 21st, FSHS seniors enjoyed an amazing afternoon at Loose Park during their Senior Picnic. Grandma's Catering provided a delicious meal that students enjoyed while soaking up the sun on such a gorgeous day. Additionally, students participated in a pumpkin painting competition, sidewalk chalk fun, and they played kickball and volleyball throughout the day. So many great memories were made on this day!

On October 21st, FSI Elementary hosted a Trunk or Treat and Family Movie Night event in the school's parking lot. Students and teachers dressed in costume as they passed out treats from their decorated trunks. This great evening concluded with a fun outdoor movie.

On Monday, October 31st, more than 400 students from FSI Elementary took a small walk to Central Office to do a little trick or treating. Central Office staff decorated their doorways and handed out small treats to each student. Central Office thoroughly enjoyed seeing the enthusiasm and joy that our little FSI Tigers brought that afternoon! We look forward to hosting this event again in 2023-24!

Frontier Schools partnered with OneSight during the month of October. The OneSight mission is to bring eye exams and glasses to the 1 in 7 people on our planet who lack access to vision care. Thank you, OneSight, for giving our students complimentary eye exams and eyeglasses!

On October 4th, FSI Middle held an induction ceremony in the school's cafeteria. Membership in this group represents a student's well-rounded commitment to academics, service, leadership and character. Congratulations to our National Junior Honor Society inductees at FSI Middle!

Frontier School of Excellence and Frontier STEM High School participate in several college visits throughout the year. During their visit, students learn about the academic programs offered, campus activities, the admissions process, financial aid, and how to apply for scholarships.

Students and staff at FSHS celebrated Hispanic Heritage Month with a Spirit Week from October 10th-14th. Each day of the week there was a different theme; such as, match with your friend/classmate, wear Frontier spirit shirts, wear your favorite jersey, dress up like a cowboy/girl, and wear a shirt or colors that represent your flag day. Hispanic music was played during passing periods. Additionally, on October 14th, FSHS is hosted a Hispanic Heritage Night for students and families. Staff and families shared authentic Hispanic entrees, delicious tostados, watched movies, played games and had a Loteria.

There are many opportunities for students to get involved in after school clubs, such as: Advanced Research Club, Gateway Readers' Club, Girls on the Run Club, Health Occupations Students of America Club, Writer's Workshop Club, Math Club, Fishing Club, Cooking Club, I.T. Club, Kindness Club, Art & Craft Club, Video Game Design Club, Chess Club, Fitness Club, Environmental Club, etc.

We are always proud of the amazing work of Frontier alumni. Our spotlight highlights the work of alumni who are using their talents to make a difference.

This month's Alumni Spotlight features Ashley Martinez, 2018 graduate from Frontier STEM High School. Ashley is currently a senior at UMKC and is graduating in May 2023 with a double major in Psychology and Criminal Justice and a minor in Spanish. Currently, Ashley is working as a Paraprofessional at Frontier STEM High School. Check out the video below to learn what her experiences at FSHS prepared her for after high school.

Teachers and school staff have visited 270 students in 240 homes since the start of the 2022-23 school year.

Home visits are paramount in bridging cultural gaps that might exist. These visits also provide opportunities for staff to understand their students better by visiting them in their home environments.
