Spring is in the air! It is a time for blossoming and finding new focus. Testing season is about to be in full swing. Just a reminder for your children to get good sleep and nutrition so they can be at their best every day.

April is Occupational Therapy Month
On March 20, we recognized FBISD's Board Certified Behavior Analysts (BCBAs) on World Behavior Analysis Day. The Special Education department is very grateful for our BCBAs and their support of our students, staff, and families.
Thank you to Brazos Valley Schools Credit Union (BVSCU) for their donation to our upcoming FBISD Transition Fair.

Fort Bend ISD’s Special Education Department will hold its annual Transition Resource Fair on Saturday, April 27 at the James Reese Center and Technical Center (12300 University Blvd., Sugar Land 77479). The event will be from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
The free event is for FBISD families with students receiving special education services. More than 60 vendors will be on hand to provide families with information on post-secondary education, housing, transportation, legal, community and recreation, and state and local agencies. Parents can pre-register using the QR code on the flyer or register at the door.
Keynote Speaker
Dr. Vickie Mitchell, Sam Houston State University endowed professor and founder of the Eleanor and Charles Garrett Center for Transition and Disability Studies, is one of the state’s leading experts in transition.
Members of the district’s Adult Transition Services team will be available to guide parents and answer questions.

National Educational Technology Plan (NETP)
In January 2024, the Office of Educational Technology, part of the Department of Education, unveiled the National Educational Technology Plan (NETP), a comprehensive initiative aimed at addressing disparities in technology use within education. The plan outlines strategies for states, districts, and schools to leverage technology effectively, tackling three key areas of inequality:
- Digital Use Divide: Unequal implementation of technology-supported instructional tasks.
- Digital Design Divide: Unequal access to professional learning opportunities for integrating technology into lessons.
- Digital Access Divide: Unequal access to connectivity and devices.
The NETP provides detailed recommendations for districts to bridge these divides. For more information, the NETP can be accessed here.
Concurrently, the Department of Education introduced two resources focusing on technology in Special Education, particularly Assistive Technology (AT). The first resource, the Dear Colleague Letter, emphasizes the significance of providing high-quality educational opportunities for all learners, including those with disabilities, through AT devices and services. It highlights the transformative potential of emerging technologies in reducing barriers and fostering inclusive education. Guidance from the Office of Educational Technology and the Office of Special Education Programs aims to clarify the requirements of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) regarding AT, dispel misconceptions, and showcase examples of AT usage. The letter underscores the collaborative role of educators, administrators, and technology specialists in ensuring access to AT devices and services as mandated by IDEA, with examples provided to illustrate how AT can enhance communication, academic participation, and daily activities for children with disabilities.
The second resource, titled "Myths and Facts Surrounding AT," aims to enhance understanding of IDEA's AT requirements, debunk common misconceptions, and illustrate AT usage for children with disabilities under both Part C and Part B of IDEA. This document caters to a diverse audience, including parents, early intervention service providers, special educators, general educators, related service personnel, and school/district administrators. Mark your calendars for the open SEPAC meeting on Wednesday, May 15 @ 6pm. All special education parents are welcome to attend to learn about SEPAC and meet other parents.
The Special Education Parent Advisory Committee (SEPAC) is a support network where parents can ask questions, meet other parents on the special education journey, and learn about relevant issues in the state and district that pertain to educating students with disabilities. The mission of the FBISD SEPAC is to:
- Advocate for innovative and inclusive educational environments
- Advise Fort Bend ISD on programs, parent/teacher trainings, and policy related to special education, and
- Support and facilitate effective communication between parents, students, and the school district
The role of a SEPAC representative is to:
- Be a liaison between campus parents and the district
- Facilitate communication between campus parents, the SEPAC, and the district
- Share information from the SEPAC and the district to campus parents
- Gather feedback from campus parents and relay back to the SEPAC and the district
- Provide feedback to the SEPAC and to the district from an engaged parent perspective as to what is working and not working at your campus

Paraprofessional Appreciation Day ~ April 3
April 3 is Paraprofessional Appreciation Day! Paraprofessionals play an important role in supporting students, from helping teachers in the classroom to providing additional help to individual students. We thank our paraprofessionals for their incredible dedication to creating positive learning experiences for students around the District.

The resources and events shared in this section are for information purposes only. Fort Bend ISD does not recommend or endorse any activity or organization. Parents and families are encouraged to determine whether an activity or organization is appropriate for them, given their unique needs.
Driving with a Disability
This program focuses on improving interaction between law enforcement and drivers with disabilities with unique communication needs. Texans now have the option to disclose “Communication Impediment” directly on their Driver License or State ID or when registering their vehicle through the DMV. This will alert the trained officer of an individual who may be slower to respond or one who is deaf or hard of hearing. Individuals with the following disability categories may be eligible: Autism, Brain Injury, Cerebral Palsy, Down Syndrome, Intellectual Disability, Parkinson’s Disease, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, Speech and Language Disorders, Deaf, and Hard of Hearing. Texana's Center for Advancement
What: Center for Advancement specialized courses
Description: Embarking on the journey from high school to adulthood is a critical transition, especially for individuals with autism or intellectual disabilities. Texana's Center for Advancement understands these challenges and is dedicated to empowering young people and adults through specialized courses designed to foster independence and success.
Courses cater to diverse needs and are open to individuals with autism, intellectual disabilities, or related disorders. Whether seeking better relationships, employment prospects, or personal enrichment, the programs focus on your journey towards independence and fulfillment.
Most courses are offered one day a week during the 11 week Spring, Summer, and Fall semesters. Course offerings change from semester to semester so please check in regularly for new learning opportunities (see bottom of page for links).
Our social skills club occurs once each week and can be joined at any time to start building a path to lifetime friendships. Course offerings include online courses and our in-person courses that are held in Fulshear, Texas.
Individuals with autism, intellectual disabilities, or related disorders are welcome to join. Activities are funded through private payment, Texas Workforce Commission, grants, or scholarships.

Sibling Connection - Ice Cream Social

Neurotypical Siblings (Teens age 13-18 and Adults 19+) and a plus +1 are invited to join us at Howdy Homemade Ice Cream in Katy. Each sibling may bring their brother or sister with an IDD, a significant other, or a friend. The Arc will purchase 1 scoop of ice cream for each person. Sibling connection offers peer support in a fun, social setting for Fort Bend Co. neurotypical siblings and next-generation caregivers.

Teen/Tween Social & Parent Night Out:
Teen/Tween Social program is a fun way for teens with IDD to practice social skills and build friendships with a network of teen peers while enjoying games & activities. Open to 11 - 18-year-old Fort Bend County residents who have an intellectual or developmental disability (IDD). Events are held on the first Friday of the month from September – June at the Family Life Center of Christ Church Sugar Land, 3300 Austin Pkwy (across from First Colony Middle School). Each event is limited to 20 teens with IDD and 20 volunteers to keep it sensory-friendly and is staffed with Behavior Technicians to monitor behavior as needed.

Recently Released: Student Video Collection - Advice for Transition
The Texas SPED Support website has added a new video collection. This collection captures real-life examples and recommendations for transition planning. In each video, the young adult shares the story of their successful transition to life beyond high school. The videos feature four different young adults from across Texas sharing their transition journey: Abigail, Daylan, Sydney, and Juan (Spanish).

New Transition Resource
The Next Steps to Independence Checklist provides a framework to develop skills for independence in adulthood for individuals with disabilities. Families might use this tool to reflect on their child’s achievements, consider any areas of concern, or collaborate with educators. Educators might use this tool to identify critical skills to address, adaptations to consider, or as an informal transition assessment for self-determination skills. Within each age group, you will see lists of activities and suggestions for teaching these critical skills and connecting with community partners.
