Weekly Wrap Up
Maple Place Middle School - 3/1/24 - Week 25
Principal's Message :
Good Afternoon, Maple Place and Happy FriYAY!
As we come to the end of the week at Maple Place, today was an important day of transition for our district. Yesterday we celebrated Dr. Laura E. Godlesky Day as dedicated by a proclamation set forth by the Board of Education. We thank Dr. Godlesky for her dedication to our schools, students, and community, and we wish her continued success in the next step of her educational journey. Today, Mr. John Russo officially began his tenure as the Interim Superintendent of the Oceanport School District. We are excited to have Mr. Russo with us and look forward to working with him over the next few months.
Spring Conferences are right around the corner coming up this Thursday and Friday, March 7th and 8th. These days will be Early Dismissal days with a 12:15pm dismissal for Maple Place. Conferences will run from 6:00-8:00pm on Thursday evening and 1:00-3:00pm on Friday afternoon. Please keep in mind that Spring Conferences are based on student need. The teachers have reached out to parents to schedule conferences for this week. If you did not receive a conference request, but have concerns that you would like to discuss, please reach out to your child's teacher(s).
Wishing you a great weekend,
Melissa Keiser
MP Students Recognized at February BOE Meeting:
A number of Maple Place students were celebrated at the Board of Education meeting this past Wednesday.
Future City Student Winners: On January 13th, Maple Place Middle School entered six teams into the 32nd Annual Future City Competition at Rutgers University. We are proud of all of our teams, but two teams finished the day earning distinctions after the scores were tabulated. Team RaTufnut received a special award for Best Use of Energy Systems finishing in 14th place. Team Waitara finished in third place overall. Making the top 3 is a huge recognition as the team had to perform their presentation on stage in front of the entire crowd. Additionally, Mrs. Goldsmith was awarded with a $750 STEM grant for the third-place finish to support learning in this area at Maple Place School in which she has selected supplies to support instruction and growth in the area of STEM.
Maple Place Student Council: Key members and officers of the newly formed Student Council at Maple Place under the guidance of Mrs. Renee Lisotto were recognized as well. The Student Leadership group has been an active group centered around service learning for many years at Maple Place. However, this year, Mrs. Lisotto formally registered the group as a Student Council in New Jersey, and have supported the students in changing the structure. This year, the executive board attended their first Fall Leadership Conference and even won an award for the service project of the year for their Anything But a Backpack campaign. The President (Miss Sheridan Taylor) and Vice President (Miss Carina Reginio) both spoke about the student council's work this year as well as their projects. We look forward to what the student leaders of the Maple Place Student Council will do next.
Mr. Small's Math Classes Plan Dream Vacations:
Mr. Small's sixth grade Math classes have been working on their Dream Vacation Projects where students choose their dream vacation destination. Students research and choose various dining options, excursions, and local outings to explore on vacation. Then, they have to figure out just how much this dream vacation is going to cost them! (Back to reality!) Check out some of their work below.
NJHS Volunteers Help at Wolf Hill Family Fun Night:
On Thursday, February 29th, Wolf Hill School hosted their first annual Wolf Hill Family Fun Night. Thank you to the members of the Maple Place National Junior Honor Society who volunteered to run the game stations for the evening's event. These students truly helped to make the night a huge success!
NJHS Book Drive:
Our National Junior Honor Society at Maple Place is hosting a book drive across the district beginning on Monday, February 26th and running through Friday, March 1st. Please see the flyer below for more information!
Winter Sports:
Winter Sports have come to an end at Maple Place. Our Lady Chargers advanced to the playoffs with the three seed which earned them a home game against Tinton Falls on Monday, February 26th. The girls came away from this game victorious with a 29-24 win over Tinton Falls. On Wednesday, the girls took on Shrewsbury away. Unfortunately, the girls lost in a nail biter 16-13 bringing their season to an end. It was a fantastic run for the Lady Chargers and Coach Ms. Megan Docherty! Thank you to all the students, staff and families who came out to show their support!
Spring Sports:
Spring Sports sign ups have taken place for Baseball, Softball, and the Volleyball Club. Students in Grades 6 through 8 can sign up to try out for Softball or Baseball. Students in grades 5 through 8 can sign up to take part in the Volleyball Club. Students were asked to check in with Nurse Dora to see if they need paperwork or physicals. All paperwork was due to the nurse by today. If you have any questions regarding sports paperwork, please contact Nurse Dora at jdora@oceanportschool.org.
Mr. Vaccarelli held a meeting for all boys trying out for Baseball this past Thursday, and Ms. Docherty will be holding a meeting for all students planning to try out for Softball this coming Wednesday, March 6th from 2:45-3:15 in the gym.
