The Raven Report: October News By: Alexa, Danica, Lainey, Averi
In the wonderful month of October, we had many big events such as the grade 8 and 9 awards ceremony, the Ravens Sr. volleyball tournament, and the many Halloween activities that unfolded.
Cross Country
Our cross country team blew us away this year, these athletes gave it their all, considering the weather wasn't the greatest. After running their way through the Strathcona Wilderness Centre course during the first cross country meet, Dylan Rose-Ruth brought home a gold medal in the Jr. boys race. Seven of our runners also qualified for zones. All the runners did a great job, including Dylan again winning another silver medal in the Jr. boys race. Not only did these athletes do amazing, they also had a blast with memories that will last a lifetime.
Awards Ceremony
RHJ gave out awards for honours (grade avg. over 80%), merit (grade avg. over 75%), fine arts, and athletics. We had many recipients of honours and merit awards. Athletic Awards were given to our top two most well-rounded athletes, who participated in many sports. Emry Malo and Tegan Miller received this award.
The Fine Arts awards are listed below:
Gr 7 Performance Arts - Skye Pettitt-Morley and Elizabeth Corr
Gr 7 Band - Jayden Linau
Gr 7 Drama - Gracie Kelly
Gr 7 Art - Alex Cluney
Gr 8 Performance Arts - Summer Honey
Gr 8 Band - Tayte Ewert
Gr 8 French - Emily Fischbach
Gr 8 Art - Anastasiia Yalanska and Kate Sadownyk
Volleyball
The second event that was coordinated by RHJ was the Sr. Volleyball Tournament. The sr. girls team played very well and improved so much, all while making everlasting memories. The team is very grateful for Mr. Kutt and Claire Hudson’s time and effort as coaches. After a long battle through round robin and play-offs the Sr. girls made it to finals and came home with a well deserved gold medal. We hope the girls continue to put in effort, and thank the coaches throughout the remainder of the season.
The junior teams played well in their tournament, on Oct. 26 and 27. The junior boys put in a fantastic effort. The junior girls won a few of their games, also putting in good effort.
There are still a few more games that you can catch at RHJ, please see the school website for more information.
Walk for Wenjack
On October 25, 202,4 our school took part in the Walk for Chanie “Charlie” Wenjack. Chanie, an Anishinaabe boy, was only 12 years old when he ran away from his residential school in Kenora, Ontario. Wenjack attempted to walk 600 km back to his home, however, his body was found 60 km away from his school. Wenjack had succumbed to exposure to the cold temperatures and lack of food. His story sparked a national conversation about the standards and practices of Residential Schools. We walked to remember all the children who attended Residential Schools, especially those who did not return home.
Halloween
Lastly, we had our Halloween fun!! Rudolph Hennig had a blast with spooky entertainment on Thursday, the 31st. In the gym we had a wicked dance with Mr. Hughes as our DJ! In the blue mat room, there was zombie chase, a colouring contest in the library, a pumpkin hunt with pumpkin decals scattered around the whole school, a Halloween bingo in Ms. Christopher’s room, a costume contest in the band room, and the mummy wrap race in the drama room. For the 2nd half of the day, all students had a choice of where they would like to spend their Halloween afternoon. We would like to give a big thank you to all of RHJ’s staff, including teachers, educational assistants, principals, volunteers, and the Leadership 9 students for making all of our Halloween events possible. Rudolph Hennig doesn't take Halloween lightly, and we make sure all students have a blast, and we are sure they did.
All in all, October was an excellent month for RHJ, from sports to awards, commemorations and holidays. Visit our website, Instagram, and Facebook to see more about the Ravens. Come back next month to see our November article.
