This Month's Panther Focus: "Kindness"
Dear Families,
We're grateful for another wonderful week of learning and growth! A special thank you to our PTO for sponsoring the second-grade in-house field trip and for sponsoring our very first International Mother Language Night. The turnout was fantastic, and a special shoutout goes to the PTO Board and Maria Vimal for coordinating the event.
Please read the newsletter in its entirety for all the exciting things happening in our classrooms, and other events that happened throughout the week and other upcoming events.
Finally, a reminder that our fifth-grade concert is this Thursday—we hope you can join us!
Thank you, and have a great week ahead.
Sincerely,
Esther and Jenna
2nd Grade In-House Field Trip
On Tuesday, The CT Humane Society came to talk to the second grade classes about animal safety. Because we live in communities with pets, the Humane Society talked specifically about safety around dogs. No live animals were brought in, just fantastic big, stuffed dogs. They spoke on animal body language as well as how to approach dogs. The kids had a blast.
Mrs. Augustyn's Class Visitors
Students in Mrs. Augustyn’s 4th grade class this week received a presentation of a lifetime. Students have been reading historical fiction texts, including book club texts focusing on the Vietnam War. Mr. Jay Sheridan and his mom, Mrs. Carol Sheridan, came in to share with students about how Mrs. Sheridan adopted Jay at the conclusion of the Vietnam War. As part of Operation Babylift, Mrs. Sheridan applied through HOLT’s Children’s Service and successfully adopted Jay from his village in Mytho, Vietnam. Students saw the power of turning to primary sources to deepen their understanding of historical events. This firsthand account will be something students look back on as they continue to explore historical fiction as a genre and has given them a primary source that has allowed them to develop even deeper connections to the texts they are reading and brought awareness to such an important time in history.
