Dear Carman Families,

Just a reminder, there will be NO SCHOOL on Monday, September 5th in observance of Labor Day.

Our PTO will be holding a general meeting on Tuesday, September 6th from 6:30 - 7:30 p.m. in the library. Please feel free to attend - it's a great way to meet our fabulous PTO members and share your insights into upcoming events! In addition to sharing the vision of the PTO, we will also have an update from Dr. Love and Dr. Villigram related to Title I and its positive impact on our school programming.

Be sure to mark your calendar for September 8th -- we will be hosting Curriculum Night here at Carman from 6:30 - 7:30 p.m. This is a great time for parents to learn about their child's curriculum for the school year and to ask any questions as well. There will be two sessions. Session 1 is from 6:30 pm - 6:55 pm. Session 2 is from 7:00 pm - 7:25 pm. This will allow families to attend more than one session if you have more than one child at Carman. Each session will take place in your child's class. Specialists will host their sessions in the library. There will be tables set up in the cafeteria, so feel free to stop by there too. If you have one child attending Carman, you can choose the session time that works best for you. Staff members will have activities for school-aged children in the gym while the parents are in the sessions.

And the big day is coming up -- PICTURE DAY! Students and staff will have their class pictures taken on Tuesday, September 13th as soon as we finish attendance in the morning.

In order to ensure that students are in the correct dismissal lineup, families MUST communicate PRIOR TO 3:00 pm with any changes. This is very important and helps our staff out tremendously. As you can imagine, the last hour of the day is one of the busiest times of the day. Thank you for your support. All day of changes should be called into the front office at 314-415-6100. If you know more than a day in advance, you can write a note and send to your child's teacher.

Please make sure your child knows how they are to get home. Feel free to write a note and place it in their backpack until they feel more comfortable with their schedule.

We would like to welcome you to our annual Title I Review and Update Meeting that will take place at our first PTO meeting. You are invited to hear more about what it means to be a school that receives Title I funding and what special programming and benefits our students receive.

Starting this school year, families of students in grades 3-12 will no longer register for Chromebook insurance. Instead, Parkway is moving to a per-incident fine structure for Chromebook damage that is not covered by the manufacturer's warranty (e.g. damaged screens, damaged keyboards, missing/damaged chargers, etc.).

When a Chromebook is turned in for repair, the device will be evaluated and repaired by a Parkway technician. A fine will be assessed if a part is required to complete the repair AND the repair is not covered by the manufacturer’s warranty. The amount of the fine will vary depending on the total cost of the parts needed to repair the Chromebook. Repairs that require parts valued under $200 are considered minor and a $25 fine will be assessed. Repairs that require parts valued over $200 are considered major and a $50 fine will be assessed. The fine structure is designed to supplement the overall cost of the repair to Parkway.

Families will be able to view and pay Chromebook repair fines through Rycor (Instructions for accessing), Parkway’s fine recording and processing system. This change allows families to pay for Chromebook repairs in the same manner in which they currently pay for other items such as library fines and event tickets, and also removes the need to annually register for Chromebook insurance.

We will discuss how we can best support the mental health of our students as they begin a new school year, and at any time. Brian will share information about the importance of mental wellness in young people and how adults can support them. He will also share information about the Student Wellness Program, which will be offered in every Parkway school this year.

Hello, Carman Trails parents! A few notes about medication at school:

• Medication Authorization Forms must be completed by the parent for all medication to be administered.
• Prescription medications must be in a prescription-labeled container. The label must state the child’s name, current date, medication name, and directions for administration. All labeled prescription medication also requires physician permission/authorization. Signed emergency action plans may be used as physician authorization.
• All over-the-counter medications must be in their original containers.
• Physician permission must accompany over-the-counter medications given for greater than 5 days.
• Medication Authorization Forms and Action Plans are available from your school nurse or found on the Health Service's website.
