Teacher Amazon Wishlist
Each year teachers on our team come up with a list of items we need for our classroom to make your child's learning experience enjoyable and more dynamic. Linked below you will find our team amazon wish list. If you decide to buy through this portal, items will be sent directly to the school and distributed within 48 hours to teachers. We collectively thank you for your support and any contributions.
Save the Date - Virtual High School Night (11/21)
Deal will be hosting a virtual High School Night (HSN) Thursday, November 21, from 6:30 pm - 8:00 pm. This is a great opportunity to hear from DCPS application high schools. Additionally, a DCPS Enrollment team representative will speak to families about the high school application process and how to navigate through myschooldc.org. More details will be shared in team newsletters as we get closer to this event.
Immunizations due December 1st
All student immunization records are due to be updated by December 1st. If you received a letter stating your student's immunizations are not in compliance, please make sure the nurse receives their updated immunization records no later than December 1st. Please contact the school nurse with any questions or concerns.
Sign Up for your Student-Led Conference
Deal will host student-led conferences on Thursday, October 10th from 12-7pm. During conferences, students will lead a discussion with their family member(s) and their advisor. This format of conference empowers our students to reflect on their learning and development and build their communication and self-advocacy skills. If you have not already done so, please use the sign-up website and your student's specific "entry code" to make an appointment. The online appointment system is available in English and Spanish and requires an email account. For support signing up for a conference, please contact your student's Advisor.
Student Government Elections
Student Government Elections began on Wednesday, October 2. In their history class, students watched campaign videos and speeches from each of the candidates. However, due to the high number of candidates this year (which is awesome!) not every class period was able to vote after watching the campaign videos. As a solution, students were given time in class to vote on Thursday. To ensure students who were absent on Thursday and Friday still have a chance to participate, voting will stay open through the weekend. The link to the campaign videos and voting form are included below.
Ms. Thompson: Science
Last week in science (9/23-9/27), we continued our exploration of the periodic table, focusing on the details of groups, periods, and the distinctions between metals, nonmetals, and metalloids. Students also had class time to work on their Adopt-An-Element projects. Parents, please check your student’s Canvas page to confirm if they have submitted their research survey titled "Monday, Sept 23, 2024 - Adopt-an-Element Research (Not The Project)." Resources, instructions, and class time have been provided for students to complete their research.
Reminder: The Adopt-An-Element Project is due on or before October 15, 2024. Please note that I have already extended the deadline, and no further extensions will be granted.
Looking Ahead to Next Week:
Monday (10/07): Students will learn to differentiate between chemical and physical properties of elements. They will also receive a study guide assignment and mastery checklist to help prepare for Wednesday’s formative assessment on the periodic table. The study guide is due Wednesday (10/09).
Tuesday (10/08): Students will engage in a gamified review session using Kahoot or Blooket to study for Wednesday’s assessment. Remember, the study guide from Monday is due on Wednesday.
Wednesday (10/09): Students will demonstrate their mastery of the periodic table through an IB Formative Assessment. For those who miss this assessment, a makeup session is available either after school on Tuesday, 10/15, or during advisory on Thursday, 10/17.
Thursday (10/10) – Friday (10/11): There will be no school for students. Parents, please remember that student-led conferences will take place on Thursday. Ensure your student accompanies you to the conference. Teachers will not be scheduling individual conferences during this time, but you are welcome to email individual teachers to schedule a check-in at a later date.
Tip: During the break, if you'd like to help your student prepare for the next topic, check the latest Canvas module, which will be published on Wednesday evening.
Ms. Walters: History
Last week students were able to wrap up their first unit of the year! Students ended the unit by writing 2 information paragraphs about interactions between the three societies we discussed in our first unit. As mentioned at back-to-school night students we are adding in a mini unit this year to discuss the presidential election in the United States. We started this mini unit with an election of our own! On Wednesday, students were able to watch campaign videos for students running for 8th grade student government and then they voted for their choices! Since we had so many students run this year, we did not have a chance to vote in all class periods. If your child was absent on Thursday or Friday, they can complete the ballot via Canvas this weekend. It is posted on my Canvas page under modules and labeled student council ballot. Please email me if they cannot find it! Finally, we finished the week beginning a discussion about the electoral college in America.
The schedule for our short week next week is below!
- Monday: Review Electoral College & Media Bias
- Tuesday: Election Project Introduction
- Wednesday: Election Project Research
- Thursday: Student Led Conferences (No School)
- Friday: Professional Development Day (No School for students)
Ms. Cunha: English
This week in ELA, students learned how to write dialogue that enhances a narrative and moves the plot forward. They also reviewed the rules for punctuating dialogue within a narrative. Students took quick formative assessment on these skills and will peer review their submissions next week.
Next week in ELA, students will do a deep dive into their DC Cape data from last school year as well as their MAP data from this year in order to prepare for student-led conferences on Thursday, October 10th. On Tuesday and Wednesday students will peer review their formatives from the previous week and complete narrative writing re-teach stations to hone their skills further.
Ms. Anderson: Math
Math 8
This past week in math class, Math 8 students worked on learning about angle relationships between parallel lines and transversals. Students also learned about properties of triangles. This coming week we will finish up our first unit and take our RCT on Wednesday. Beginning with the month of October, students will receive 2 iReady lessons that will be opened on Monday and due the following Sunday at 11:59pm.
Algebra 1
This past week in class students learned about graphing one variable inequalities on a number line and ended the week with graphing compound inequalities. This coming week we will work on writing inequalities from word problems and graphing those solutions on a coordinate plane. Algebra 1 students will also begin to receive weekly homework on Delta Math. This will be posted on Monday and due on Sunday at 11:59pm.
It is very important that you and/or your student subscribe to my Remind Alerts. I will be sending out a message sometime on Monday reminding kids to bring pencil, paper and a notebook to class. Remind is how I communicate information to students about their homework. Notices go directly to their phone and are mainly received through a text message (or the app if you download it from the Google Play Store or the App Store). At times I will also attach the assignment in Remind as well. The other useful quality of Remind is that students can ask questions through the app about their homework. These questions go straight to me, so there is no need to feel embarrassed about asking a "dumb question". Most of the time students just need a quick point in the right direction to finish their homework.
If you are not currently receiving Remind notices from me (I've sent several), please make sure you join the correct class by clicking on the link below. You can sign up to receive messages through email, or as text messages through your phone.
