PK Blues News
November 2024
ADMIN MESSAGE
Hello Blues Families,
We have many exciting things happening at Paul Kane this November! In October, the Admin team visited our grade 10 students up at the Building Futures site in Jensen Lakes. These talented students are building a home from the ground up! We wrapped up October this week with our annual PK Halloween costume contest hosted by PKSU. We also hosted over 300 elementary students this week who toured our Haunted House that was built, designed, and decorated by our construction, theatre, and esthetics students. Amazing! We now turn our focus to our Remembrance Day ceremony that will be held on November 8th. Our Celebration of Excellence on November 14th and 15th also highlights the academic accomplishments of our incredible students. Finally, fundraising for the Grad class of 2025 is underway. Grads are currently selling Purdy’s chocolates, and will host our upcoming Games Night later this month.

COUNSELLORS CORNER:
Here’s what has been happening at Student Services:
September - Parent Summit - Raising Independent Teens.
October - World Mental Health Day activities during lunch.
Our Mental Health Therapist & Addictions Therapist started accepting referrals & working with students.
Our Health Recovery Facilitator has been working with students and families who need connections to outside agencies and resources.
Lots of post secondary & career counselling happening as applications opened on Oct.1.
Biweekly grades & attendance checks at every grade level have been ongoing with a focus on connecting with kids and helping them stay or get back on track.
Wellness check ins at student request fill the majority of our days!
Our school resource officer, Cst. MJ Burroughs is onsite regularly to support students with community concerns.
As a division, our counsellors have been doing a book study on The Anxious Generation by Jonathan Haidt. Here are some key learnings so far:
“Overprotection in the real world and under protection in the virtual world
are the major reasons why children born after 1995 became the anxious generation.”
“People are more likely to be depressed when they feel socially disconnected. A play based childhood strengthens connections while a phone based childhood weakens them.”
“By 2022, 46% of teens said they were online almost constantly.
This may be the key to the sudden collapse of adolescent mental health.”
We are pleased to report that from a counselling perspective, the NEW boundaries with cell phone use at PK are already showing us an increase in face to face connections & positive interactions and a decrease in the amount of phone related issues that negatively impact our students. We feel hopeful!
If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to reach out to us anytime!
