We say Goodbye to Mrs. Sarah Svien
We say a tearful goodbye to Sarah Svien. Sarah has been at Sacred Heart School for 24 years and she has served many roles: librarian, preschool teacher, 3rd grade teacher, MS social/religion, gala coordinator and admissions/marketing.
Sarah always jumped in wherever she was needed. She will be working full time for a family business.
Best of luck to you Sarah!
Welcome to Jill Weir---3rd grade teacher
I am thrilled to be joining the Sacred Heart Community. I have experienced the Catholic School System both as a parent and an educator. It is a way of living and teaching my faith that is important to me. I spent many years in Mankato raising my three children. I recently moved back to Minneapolis to be closer to my family. I look forward to getting to know the families that make up Sacred Heart.

Catechesis of the Good Shepherd (CGS)
Over the past two and a half years, Catechesis of the Good Shepherd (CGS) has benefitted me personally and professionally. It has set my heart on fire with the truths of the faith, aided my understanding of child development (which I was grateful to receive before becoming a parent), increased my participation at Mass, and formed deep friendships with other catechists. I want to share some of the gifts of CGS in my life and invite you to consider if God is calling you to join this great work at Sacred Heart.
The CGS presentations have lifted up key gestures in the Mass like the offering. Through the priest’s gesture and words, Jesus is offered back to the Father, with thanksgiving and praise. When I am at Mass, I consider how everything we have is from God (recalled in the gesture of the epiclesis when the priest’s hands overshadow the bread and wine) and everything we can offer back to God is also from God (recalled in the gesture of the offering when the priest lifts up the paten and chalice)! CGS has aided me in a deeper appreciation of Scripture. I used to be dismissive of the parables and maxims (like “Be perfect as your heavenly Father is perfect") because I couldn’t “figure them out”. Now, I’ve seen the beauty of pondering them and what they can tell us about remaining with Jesus on the vine or about creation, redemption, and parousia (when God will be all in all).
CGS assists the child in falling in love with God AND engages content from an intellectual level. This convinces me that it is the best faith formation model we have. Everything in Level I (3-6 years old) is about falling in love with the Good Shepherd. In Level II (6-9 years old), the child uses their reasoning mind to work and study which leads to prayer. These two moments (falling in love and then engaging intellectual content) complement each other. The first excites and makes the faith come alive. The second moment can be rich, deep, and full, IF it is preceded by the first. Many of us have stories to share from our lives or the lives of others who walked away from the faith because of this lack of integration.
Hearing responses from the children this year increased my faith. The children really were quiet in the atrium! They really did enjoy their work. They said things like, “He is the Light of the World” and “Jesus is in our hearts.” I am excited to see how CGS brings children, parents, and the entire Sacred Heart community to a greater love of God.
Training to be a catechist is a large commitment, but also such a gift. If you are interested in being trained, here are the upcoming dates. Please reach out to me to learn more or to register.
St. Ambrose, Woodbury- July 23, 24, 25, and August 20, 21, 22
The Way of the Shepherd, Blaine- August 7, 8, 9 and August 14, 15, 16
St. Joseph, West St. Paul- Sept 21; Nov 16; Jan 18, 2025; Feb 15, 2025; March 22, 2025; April 12, 2025
If you are interested in serving CGS in other ways like assisting the catechist during atrium sessions or making materials, we are in need of both. Please contact me about helping. If you want to know more about CGS, scan this code to visit the blog of a local catechist and formation leader. Pray for the children, their families, and the catechists.
In Christ,

Need help paying for tuition?
MN Fundraising Initiative (MNFI) secures contracts with over 23 venues in the greater Twin Cities area including Target Field, Target Center, Canterbury, and US Bank to operate food and beverage concessions stands at their events.
MNFI organizes teams of volunteers from all over the state of MN and WI who work together to run these stands. In turn, MNFI receives donations from these venues. The donations are then used to award grants to families in local communities to allow youth to attend private school, such as Sacred Heart Catholic School and participate in enrichment activities they may not otherwise be able to enjoy. Checks are mailed directly to Sacred Heart in your name.
Many of our school families use this organization to help pay for tuition.
