MESSAGE FROM PRINCIPAL OPHUS
Dear Fairview Families,
It is hard to believe we only have just over a week left of this school year! As this will be our final newsletter for this school year, I want to take a moment to share that I truly believe we’ve had a terrific year at Fairview! I am so proud of our students for all of their hard work they’ve shown and the growth they have made over the course of the past 10 months. I am also thankful for the good work of our staff in creating positive learning experiences and environments for our students and for the support of our parent community for all of the work that is being done at home to help our students learn and grow. Together we have made a positive impact for our students this year.
Over the past couple of weeks, we’ve had some exciting opportunities for our students to enjoy. On May 13th, our students were captivated by a performance by Chicago Dance Crash through Urban Gateways where the group taught our students about the history of dance from ballet to break dancing. Our students were entertained and many had a chance to show off their own dance moves as well. Then on May 17th, we had another successful Fairview PTO Fun Fair. It was an amazing turnout and from the smiles on our students’ faces, I am confident that they made some great memories with their friends and families. Special thanks to the PTO for making both of these events possible! As we head into the summer after just six more school days, I wanted to highlight a few important events and logistics related to the end of the year and summer. Thank you for reading to stay connected with all things Fairview. If I don’t see you between now and then, have a wonderful, safe summer. To all our 5th graders and families that will no longer have students at Fairview, we will miss you and wish you all the best in all the future holds. For our returning students and families, I look forward to welcoming you back to Fairview on Thursday, August 22nd for our first day of next school year!
Sincerely,
Dan Ophus
Fairview Principal
5th Grade Clap Out: On the last day of school, Tuesday, June 4th, we will honor our 5th grade students with our annual 5th Grade Clap Out. This is a Fairview tradition where our 2nd, 3rd, and 4th graders along with the Fairview staff will line the halls and clap for the 5th graders as they exit Fairview. This tradition is a great way to show them our appreciation for all they’ve accomplished in their years at Fairview. Parents of 5th grade students are welcome to line up outside the 3rd grade door at 11:40am to cheer our 5th graders on as they leave Fairview for the last time as students. We will miss this group as they have shown tremendous leadership and character during their time at Fairview!
Summer Academics: In an effort to help maintain and sharpen skills, we recommend that you take some time throughout each week this summer to support students with regular reading time and math practice. Use the guide below to help you in this effort.
Current 2nd Grade Students
Read 15-20 minutes per day.
Math - Master addition/subtraction facts up to 20. If mastered, start working on multiplication facts 0-9. Practice 3-4 times per week
Current 3rd Grade Students

Math - Practice multiplication/division facts 0-9. If mastered, work on IXL skill practice. Practice 4-5 times per week
Current 4th Grade Students

Current 5th Grade Students

Math - Practice multiplication/division facts 0-12. If mastered, work on IXL skill practice. Practice 4-5 times per week
Students can use Reflex Math (can be accessed in ClassLink through 7/31), XtraMath (you can create a free account), flash cards, or the Math Facts Challenge to support their math fact practice, and we encourage you to participate in the Mount Prospect Public Library Summer Reading Program to access high quality books to keep students reading throughout the summer. When they are reading each day, it is good to have them read both silently and aloud to sharpen their skills in both areas. School IXL, Newsela, RAZ and BrainPop accounts (all accessible through ClassLink if a student signs into their school account) are also available this summer for use through July 31st.
Retirements: I wanted to take a moment to extend a heartfelt thank you to Alice Chapman (2nd grade teacher), Donna Kennedy (PE teacher), and Carolyn Young (Fairview secretary) for the combined 70 years of service they’ve given to District 57 as they will be starting their retirement at the end of this school year. Each of them has made a tremendous, positive impact on the lives of students, staff, and families. Their dedication, commitment to our students and our school, and enthusiastic approach to their respective jobs have all helped make our school a better place, and we will miss each of them greatly in the years to come. Please join me in thanking them and wishing them all the best as they start this next chapter of their lives. They each leave big shoes to fill, that is for sure!
More Staff Updates: As we look ahead to next school year, I wanted to let you all know about some staff changes that will start in August. First, our wonderful Assistant Principal, Una Durkan, is heading back into the classroom. She has done such an amazing job in her role as assistant principal over the past seven years, and I want to personally thank her for all of the ways she has supported our students, staff, and families during this time frame. Earlier this winter, she let us know that she has a strong desire to take on a classroom teacher position once again. She had been teaching at Fairview for many years prior to becoming assistant principal, so she will be doing this again starting in August as a 5th grade teacher right here at Fairview! Next, current 4th grade teacher, Jenna Hoffman, is going to be teaching in 3rd grade next school year. Jenna has had a highly successful first year as a classroom teacher, and we know she will continue to make a positive impact with our 3rd graders starting in August. With only five sections of 4th grade on schedule for next year, we needed to make a move to 3rd grade, which is going up by one section. Last, I am excited to share that current 2nd grade teacher, Rylee Tulloch, is going to be moving into her new role as PE teacher starting in August, filling the vacancy left with Donna Kennedy’s retirement. Rylee has been working hard to earn her PE endorsement over the past few years, and we are happy to have her taking on this new role!
Report Cards: Teachers will be sending third trimester report cards home with students on Tuesday, June 4th. This is a half-day of school and we will dismiss students at 11:50am on this date. We will include a Spring MAP (measures of academic progress) report, and 2nd grade students will also receive their CogAT score report. Progress reports will be included for students receiving various supplemental support from our staff. For students with IEPs, case managers will be emailing goal updates.
Chromebook Collection: As we get closer to the end of the school year, we will be collecting Chromebooks, cases, and chargers from all students. Please make a note to send chromebooks, cases, AND chargers with students to school on the following dates: 2nd, 3rd, and 5th grades - Friday, May 31st, 4th grade - Monday, June 3rd. We are hoping to not have to make calls to parents of students who forgot to bring their charger or computer back to school, so please plan accordingly.
Employment Opportunities: Heading into next school year, we are on the lookout for parents who are interested in working at Fairview as substitute teachers and/or substitute instructional assistants. If you are interested in pursuing this option, please email me at dophus@d57.org to let me know. This is a great way to become more involved in the Fairview community and will certainly help us to fill vacancies as they come up. Thank you for your consideration!
FES News: To watch the final edition of the FES News for this school year created by our Fairview Media Club, please click here. Special thanks to the Media Club and Mrs. Soderholm for all of their efforts in creating these news segments for our students, staff, and community to enjoy!

HELPFUL INFORMATION
STUDENT ATTENDANCE
Fairview utilizes an online form that parents can fill out if their child is going to be absent. This form is found on our website, but is linked here for your reference as well. You are still welcome to call the attendance line in the office as has been the case in the past if you prefer. If you need to report an absence after 8:50 am, please call the school office rather than using the form. Fairview's attendance line phone number is the school's general phone number, 847-394-7320 and then press"1." The attendance line is available 24/7 for your convenience.
STUDENT SIGN-IN/SIGN-OUT PROCEDURE
REMINDER FOR PARENTS OF BUS RIDERS
If your child is a bus rider and will not be riding the bus home on a certain day, we ask that you always send a note with your student. This note should include your child’s name, date, and bus route number. Please state that your child will not ride the bus on that day, and add any other pertinent information regarding how your child will be going home on that day. For your convenience, here is a form that you can print out and use. If a bus student does not have a note, they will ride the bus home...no exceptions. Only students who are signed up for the bus may ride the bus to and from school. If your child (non bus rider) has a play date with a bus rider, other arrangements will have to be made for their transportation at the end of the school day.
DID YOUR STUDENT'S END OF DAY TRAVEL PLANS CHANGE AT THE LAST MINUTE?
KEEP THE FRONT OFFICE INFORMED
If you email your student's teacher regarding vacation plans, end of day transportation plans, illness, doctor appointments, etc., please include the front office staff in your communication.
Also, please contact Fairview School’s office if your home/cell phone number, emergency contact numbers, or email address have changed.
If you have moved, please immediately contact the front office so we can update your student's records.
