McDill Elementary Parent Newsletter
September 14, 2023
Hello Timberwolf Families,
It's been great to have students back in the building again! Hopefully any early jitters are out of the way and our students are looking forward to the remainder of the school year.
During these first days, students have been learning and reviewing expectations for their classrooms, the hallways, the playground and the cafeteria. In respect to the cafeteria, we have two important requests/reminders:
- If your child is supposed to eat breakfast at school, they should go directly to the cafeteria after getting dropped off or off the bus. They can go to the playground after they have finished eating.
- Students should be instructed to not share their lunch with classmates, or ask for food from others. While sharing may seem like a friendly gester, for health and safety reasons, we want our students to only eat what their parents/guardians are expecting them to eat.
In addition, the playground expectations we have for our students can be found here. Thank you for encouraging positive behaviors at home, as well as at school.
Next Friday, September 22nd, is our Grandparents/Special Friends' Day! The lunch times and menu for that day can be found below. Please know that our visitors will be directed to enter the building through the main front doors. Visitors will register in the lobby area and then be guided to the library, where they will wait until it is time to be escorted to lunch. Payment for the meal can be made by cash or check, either in advance or that day. This is one of McDill’s most special events and we look forward to the excitement in the building that day.
Lastly, we invite you to the first PTO meeting for the year. All parents are strongly encouraged and welcome to attend!

IMPORTANT PICK-UP / DROP-OFF REMINDERS
- Parents/Guardians SHOULD NOT park on WILLOW STREET or BEECH STREET and cross School Street to pick up their child. This is an unsafe practice even if the child is accompanied by an adult.
- We strongly encourage parents/guardians to NOT park in the parking lot and walk across the pick-up lane. The line to pick up students actually moves quite quickly when everyone follows procedures.
- While waiting in the pickup line, PLEASE AVOID stopping in front of driveways or the intersection to allow local residents access to and from their homes

Two more McDill staff received the Green Classroom Professional Certificate through the U.S. Green Building Council. Abigail Jones (5th Grade Teacher) and Joe Sbertoli (Principal) completed the online course at the end of last school year. They joined 8 other staff who received this certificate a few years ago: Amy Ervin, Stacy Korger, Anne Leton, Cristy Lewallen, Heather Bolton, Koren Rohde, Jami Stuettgen, and Renee Schanck.
As a Wisconsin Green & Healthy School and 2020 U.S. Dept. of Education Green Ribbon School, McDill staff continue to build on their Green & Healthy culture in order to meet the three Green & Healthy Schools goals:
- Reduce Environmental Impacts & Costs
- Improve Health & Wellness
- Increase Environmental Literacy
By participating in the Green Classroom Professional (GCP) certificate program, educators and school staff gain the knowledge to identify what supports or impedes healthy, resource-efficient and environmentally sustainable learning spaces.

IT WAS A GREAT DAY TO SHARE A BOOK WITH A BUDDY!
International Literacy Day was celebrated around the world on September 8th. Many students here learned the importance of reading. In the U.S. we are fortunate to have good schools and support systems to help our children read. Lollipops for Literacy was designed to remind us that we need to “lick” illiteracy by learning to read. Poems and stories were read to the younger students by our 5th and 6th grade classes. It was a yummy day of reading!
