The Crawford Connection
September 2024
Dear Crawford Families,
We have had a great start to the 2024-2025 school year. Our students are doing a great job following expectations and working hard in their classes. Last week, students took their first MAP Math and MAP Reading test. We will be sharing results with families soon.
We look forward to another great month with our Crawford students and families, and hope to see you at our Open House on September 5 and our Fall Festival on September 26. This will be a great opportunity to connect with your child's teachers.
Sincerely,
Dr. Trimble, Mrs. Piatt, Ms. Shockey, and Mr. Castillo

Detention
Students have the opportunity to earn four points every day in each class for following our school-wide LEADer expectations. That is a total of 160 points every week. When students do not meet the LEADer expectations, they lose points (infractions). Each week student infractions are tracked through eOS:
- Students who lose 12-18 points within a one-week period (Monday-Friday) will be assigned a 1.5 hour detention to be served the following Friday from 4:15-5:45.
- Students who lose 19-24 points within a one-week period (Monday-Friday) will be assigned a two hour detention to be served the following Friday from 4:15-6:15.
- Students who lose 25 or more points within a one-week period (Monday-Friday) will be assigned a Saturday detention to be served the following Saturday from 9:30 am - 12:00 pm.
- Points lost will be adjusted for short weeks and communicated with students and families.
Students may also receive after school detention or Saturday detention as a consequence for an office discipline referral. Families will be responsible for picking their student up on time at the end of detention.
Detention Criteria for the Week of September 3-6
Tardies
It is important for students to be on time to each class so they do not miss instruction.
If a student arrives 1-7 minutes after the bell to any class without a valid note/pass, they will be admitted to class and marked tardy in IC.
Administration will run a weekly report of tardies to class and assign consequences based on the following guidelines:
2-5 times a week: Admin/Parent/Student phone conference
6-9 times a week: 1.5 hour detention
10+ times a week: Saturday school
If a student arrives 8+ minutes after the bell to any class without a valid note/pass, they will be admitted to class, marked tardy and receive an office discipline referral for skipping
1st ODR for skipping: 1.5 hour detention
2nd ODR for skipping: 2 hour detention
3rd+ ODR for skipping: Saturday School and referral to student support team

Title I Family Engagement
Two great ways to “Connect with Crawford” are happening this month! First, on Thursday, September 5th from 6:00-7:30 we will host our official Open House for this new school year! Families will be able to tour the building on their child’s schedule - meeting teachers and visiting classrooms. There will also be an informational video from our administrators, as well as breakout sessions focused on school safety, extracurricular activities, technology, and more! Light refreshments will be provided. Then, on Thursday, September 26th our Fall Festival will take place from 5:30-7:00. Activities will be hosted by our science and math departments. More details will be shared in team newsletters. We hope to connect with your family at both events!

Backpacks and Lockers
We will be using lockers this year and our expectation is that phones and non-clear backpacks are secured in them all day. We require students to keep their backpacks, large bags, and purses in their lockers, unless they are clear. Clear backpacks/bags/purses help ensure that students are not bringing things they are not supposed to into their classes (such as snacks, drinks, and other contraband). Doing this provides an environment for students to focus on instruction rather than external distractions.
Since each FCPS student is assigned a chromebook, this eliminates multiple textbooks needing to be carried. Students will be permitted to use their lockers upon arrival, at lunch (if necessary), and at dismissal. Any other times, students will need to have permission from an adult.
Crawford Daily Schedule
The lunch period is highlighted in green on the schedule and is 75 minutes with 25 of it allotted for lunch. Your child’s teacher will communicate specific lunch times with students. We also will have a 30 minute class called Leader in Me this year.
Morning Arrival and Afternoon Dismissal
Car riders and walkers will be welcomed into the building at 8:35 a.m. each day.
Car riders must be dropped off on the front side of our building (the football field side). Please follow all staff directing traffic and have your student exit from the right side of the vehicle.
Walkers may enter through the front or back entrance, whichever is closest on their route.
- When driving on campus, please drive slowly and follow directions of the staff.
Our dismissal process will begin at 3:55 p.m. Please be patient as we release smaller groups of students to the buses, cars, and to walk home to limit the number of students in the hallways.
Car riders must be picked up on the front side of our building (the football field side). Please pull all the way around the loop, drive forward to the stop sign, and have your student enter through the right side of the vehicle.
Walkers may exit through the front or back entrance, whichever is closest on their route.
- When driving on campus, please drive slowly and follow directions of the staff.
