Half Day

What's Your Family's Favorite Dessert?
At school we learn that culture can both make each of us unique and, at the same time, connect us to one another. While we often think of culture as country of origin, language, ancestry, etc., culture is also made up of all of the small routines and traditions that we practice. This week students examined one of these small bits of culture, dessert! Ask your child if they can find their dessert represented in our Half Day word cloud. (see photo to the left!)
We invite you to share a family photo enjoying your favorite dessert, and/or create a short (under 2 minutes) video talking as a family about how dessert relates to your culture. Send it to us at communications@d103.org!

Happy Teacher Appreciation Week!
District 103 formally recognizes its 184 certified staff members during National Teacher Appreciation Week May 5 through May 9. The district’s Parent Teacher Organization has been showing its appreciation with the theme of “Shine So Bright.” The PTO has been recognizing teachers throughout the week with lunch, treats, and other acts of kindness for their work both in and beyond the classrooms. The Board of Education also thanked its teachers at the school board meeting on May 6.
"Sending SEISMIC HAWK W a V e S of appreciation for your endless creativity, dedication, and heart that you bring to our students every day! Your impact is the core of our 'Half Day Nest' and is appreciated every day," shared Principal Jill Mau.
Thank you to our school nurses on National School Nurse Day, May 7, when we recognize the vital role school nurses play in supporting student health, safety, and academic success.
Thank you to everyone who helps communicate the news to families on National School Communicators Day, May 9, which honors those who keep school communities informed, engaged, and connected through thoughtful and effective communication.
Tick Season
With the warmer weather upon us, we want to alert you that tick season has arrived. We have observed ticks accompanying some students into our building, which means these critters may potentially be making their way into your homes as well.
Please take a moment to:
- Check your child's clothing after outdoor activities.
- Conduct regular tick checks of your child's hair and skin.
- Be vigilant about any unusual marks or "freckles" that weren't there before.
- Consider appropriate insect repellent for outdoor play.
Our third- through fifth-grade students spend significant time outdoors during recess and/or PE, making these precautions particularly important.
Thank you for your help in keeping our students healthy and tick-free!
Library Book Checkout
The last week students may check books out of the school library is the week of May 19. Books are due back to the library no later than Tuesday, May 27.
Register Now: Returning Students
Returning student registration is now open for grades early childhood through seventh.
- Please reach out to your child's school if you have questions about registration or email PowerSchool@d103.org.
- If your family is moving and not planning to return to District 103, kindly let your child’s school office know about your plans so that we do not bother you about registration and place your child in a 2025-2026 classroom.
- The thermometer shows 509 students registered and 1,138 students unregistered.
Retiring Board Member
The District recognized Mrs. Kate Harper, Board Member, for her service to the District. Mrs. Harper is retiring from the Board after serving for 12 years.
We are grateful for Mrs. Harper’s service as an advocate for student growth and success. Congratulations, Mrs. Harper, on a job well done!
Swearing in of New Board Members

● Anne van Gerven, serving on the board since 2013.
