An Evening of Amazing Jazz
Rodney Whitaker Septet to Perform at HSHS
On Saturday, February 29, the Rodney Whitaker Septet, along with vocalist Rockelle Fortin, will perform in the Harbor Springs Performing Arts Center at 7pm. This is a free concert sponsored by the Pawlak Family and all are encouraged to come hear this world-class event. In addition to the septet, our middle and high school jazz bands will perform, serving as the opening act.
Mr. Whitaker recently led MSU's jazz ensembles to a third place ranking at the Lincoln Center Inaugural Jack Rubin Jazz Championship in January. The musicians competed against students from The Julliard School, Manhattan School of Music, and other prestigious programs. CLICK HERE to read more about their accomplishment.
In addition to a heavy performance schedule that takes him all over the world, Rodney Whitaker is the Director of Jazz Studies at Michigan State University’s College of Music, where he serves as the professor of double bass jazz studies. He has presented master classes at such institutions as Duke University, Howard University, University of Michigan, Lincoln Center, The New School, and the Detroit International Jazz Festival. He has worked with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra to develop a jazz education department, and conducts their Civic Jazz Orchestra. He has been involved with countless recordings as both a band leader, as well as a collaborator. A small sample of musicians he has recorded with include Wynton Marsalis, Wycliffe Gordon, Dianne Reeves, Carl Allen, as well as the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra.
