Fighting Scot News
Nov. 2024
Good Afternoon Highland Families!
Here we are in November, I want to express my gratitude for the support and engagement you continue to bring to our school community. This month is filled with activities, including our Veterans Day Assembly, athletic events, and opportunities for students to focus on both academics and personal growth as we approach the end of the semester.
In this issue, you'll find important updates on upcoming events, highlights from October, and ways you can stay involved. I encourage you to read through each section to stay connected with all that's happening at Highland High School.
Thank you for your partnership in helping our students succeed. Please let me know if you need anything.
Go Scots!

Veterans Day Assembly
On Monday, November 11th, our Navy JROTC seniors will host a Veterans Day program in the high school gym, beginning at 10:25 a.m. and lasting approximately 30 minutes. During the program, Navy JROTC cadets will introduce our guest speaker, Major Paul Kunkle, USMC, who will join HHS as an NJROTC instructor in the 2025–2026 school year. Additionally, our state-qualifying band and high school choir will perform. We invite all veterans to attend, and they are welcome to enjoy a complimentary lunch in the cafeteria following the program. Please share this invitation with any veterans who may be interested in attending.

DEPARTMENT SPOTLIGHT:
Highland High School Social Studies Department
Meet the dedicated Social Studies teachers of Highland High School! From left to right, we have Mr. Williams, Mr. Longhino, Mr. Walls, Mr. Wendt, and Mr. Beal. This talented team brings history, government, and social sciences to life, helping students explore the past and understand its impact on the present. Each teacher brings unique expertise, creating engaging and meaningful learning experiences for our students every day.
Kathryn Loeffler Selected for National YMCA Youth Advocacy Program
Congratulations to Kathryn Loeffler, who has been chosen to participate in the prestigious National YMCA Youth Advocacy Program! This selective program accepts only 50 students nationwide, with just two students from each state, making Kathryn’s selection an outstanding achievement.
Over the next four months, Kathryn will engage in training that empowers students to advocate on issues important to the YMCA. The program culminates in an invaluable real-world experience, allowing students to meet with members of Congress and their staff in Washington, D.C., in March 2025. Kathryn will complete several assignments as part of her preparation, and her trip will be fully funded by the National YMCA.
Kathryn is the first Highland student to apply for this program, and we’re excited to support her as she heads to Washington, D.C.!
Breakfast with Santa
Highland BPA is hosting our 2nd annual Breakfast with Santa in the High School cafeteria on Dec. 21 8:30-11! Pictures with Santa, crafts and breakfast will be included. Any questions fill free to reach out to Mrs. Cahall at: angel_c@hlsd.us
Highland FFA Trunk or Treat
FFA Trunk or Treat
The Highland FFA Trunk or Treat event held on Tuesday, October 29th was a fantastic success! Children in 5th grade and under enjoyed a fun-filled evening at the Highland High School bus parking lot, collecting candy from creatively decorated cars and tables.
Thank you to all the Highland Community, high school clubs, student organizations, and sports teams who participated with candy, decorations, and enthusiasm to make this event a memorable experience for our Highland youth. A special thanks to Mrs. Reynolds and Mr. Smith for all their hard work to make this happen. We’re grateful for all the support and look forward to next year’s event!
