The impacts of technology on our children...
The Anxious Generation
In The Anxious Generation, social psychologist Jonathan Haidt lays out the facts about the epidemic of teen mental illness that hit many countries at the same time. He then investigates the nature of childhood, including why children need play and independent exploration to mature into competent, thriving adults. Haidt shows how the *play-based childhood" began to decline in the 1980s, and how it was finally wiped out by the arrival of the "phone-based childhood" in the early 2010s. He presents more than a dozen mechanisms by which this "great rewiring of childhood" has interfered with children's social and neurological development, covering everything from sleep deprivation to attention fragmentation, addiction, loneliness, social contagion, social comparison, and perfectionism. He explains why social media damages girls more than boys and why boys have been withdrawing from the real world into the virtual world, with disastrous consequences for themselves, their families, and their societies.

Senior Program Partnership
Update: Senior Program
Senior Citizens...
Planning has begun. Contact the school (973.827.7570) if interested in participating.
Mark your calendars with the three meeting dates:
- November 18 (9:00-10:30 AM)
- March 10 (9:00-10:30 AM)
- May 19 (9:00-10:30 AM)
We are excited to announce a special opportunity to partner with senior citizens from our community for the 2024 "Senior Project" at Hamburg School. This project pairs middle school students with seniors to learn about life through the experiences of older generations. The theme for this year's project is "Your Hometown."
Students will interview seniors and work closely with them to create a biography based on their life and memories of their hometown. The final biographies will be compiled into a book, which will be presented to the seniors at a special event in May.
How It Works:
- Seniors will be invited to visit the school three times: in November, March, and May;
- The program will run from 9:00 AM - 10:30 AM at each meeting;
- Breakfast will be served;
- Seniors are encouraged to bring childhood photos to share with the students. These photos will be scanned and promptly returned;
- Students will write a biography based on their interactions with the seniors and their stories.
- The completed biographies will be presented to the seniors during the May meeting.
This is a wonderful way for our students to learn from the experiences of older generations, and we believe this will be a meaningful and rewarding experience for both the students and seniors.
If you or someone you know would like to participate in the Senior Program, please contact the main office (973-827-7570) to sign up or learn more. We look forward to learning from your life stories and sharing them with our students!

Background Information and Moving Forward
In 2023 the Hamburg School partnered with Kathleen Helawa Educational Consultants to develop a 5 year (2023-2028) Strategic Plan. A school strategic plan is a document that outlines a school's goals, objectives, and strategies for the future. It's a roadmap that helps guide the school towards achieving its goals and objectives, and it can also help schools meet the needs of their students, staff, and community. The Hamburg School's District Goals are developed based on the needs outlined in the Strategic Plan and serve as the premise of the Superintendent's annual evaluation.
