Principally Speaking
Dear Winthrop Families,
I am so excited to share with you that Winthrop School will be hosting an artist-in-residence throughout the month of May. The artist, Yetti Frenkel, came to Winthrop at the end of March to meet with students and discuss ideas for creating a mosaic centered on the theme of Sustaining Ipswich Outdoors. During her presentation to students she brainstormed with them about different outdoor sites around town that they interact with; such as Willowdale Forest and the vernal pools, Crane Beach, and Russell Orchards. The students were able to share many special landmarks in Ipswich and Yetti described how they would each create a pencil and paper drawing of their idea in art class with Mrs. Leigh.
Over the past few weeks, Yetti has gathered those drawings and selected some of them to incorporate into her mosaic. During the first two weeks of May, Yetti will work with students to fabricate the mural using glass tiles during their art classes. We will also host an Art in the Park event on Saturday, May 11th from 2-4 PM at Winthrop when all families will be invited to add the finishing touches and tile pieces to the mosaic. This will be coupled with a Winthrop playground community clean-up day (see information below). Mark your calendars ~ this is sure to be a memorable community-building day for our fabulous school.
The final mosaic will be installed in the lobby just outside our cafeteria. Special thought has been given to ensure that the mosaic can be moved to a new location should we have a new facility in the future.
Many special thanks and recognition to Winthrop parent, Ana Laguarda; art teacher, Camela Leigh; and program manager, Meghan Ganley for helping to write the grants to support this project and for their organization and planning.
Creatively Yours,
Amy

April Harvest of the Month
April Harvest of the Month - Dairy
Goat Cheese
by: Adrienne Stump
Harvest of the Month is here. This month is dairy. On Friday, April 26 right after April vacation, we will be serving honey-whipped goat cheese from Valley View Farmstead Cheeses in Topsfield, MA.
Valley View Farm has over 40 Anglo-Numbian goats! Make sure you try some yummy cheese.
Some fun facts about goats:
● Goats use the sneeze sound as an alarm.
● They are very picky eaters and will not eat any hay that has been walked on or has been on the ground for over a day.
● Goats do not like to touch water and would rather leap over streams or puddles rather than walk in it.
● Goats are very sociable and are sad if they are not with their friends.
