Classroom Spotlight: Social Studies
6th Grade - Early Humans
In this unit, students will dive into the fascinating story of early humans, exploring the evolution of Homo sapiens and how their physical environment influenced their way of life. By studying the archaeological record, including artifacts and remains from the Paleolithic and Neolithic periods, students will uncover how early humans lived and adapted to their surroundings. They'll also investigate the groundbreaking technologies that spurred the Neolithic Revolution, which marked a major turning point in history. Moving forward, students will explore the rise of early river valley civilizations, examining the characteristics that defined them and how geographic factors shaped their development. Through this exploration, students will compare two major river valley civilizations, analyzing how they adapted to their environments to meet basic needs like food, clothing, and shelter.
7th Grade - Causes of the American Revolution
8th Grade - The Gilded Age
In this unit, students are exploring the Gilded Age in the United States. The late 1800s through early 1900s was a period of great change in the U.S. and students will explore themes of labor, urbanization, industrialization, immigration and racial violence and their impact on the lives of Americans living at the time. Students will discuss how these themes continue to impact the United States today and will examine data as to how these trends have changed over time.
